On YouTube there was someone burning a quran, in protest of the political system in Iran. I think that would be an ineffectual way to bring about change, but on the other hand, he should be covered under freedom of speech. I've heard of blasphemy laws and so forth in other areas of the world, so I'm curious - what do you think?

Nothing wrong with burning it, nor burning any other religious book, as long as he obtained it in a legal manner.

[edit]And as long as the act is not designed to create hatred.

i think he should have the right to burn it as a political act and free speech.
at the same time i find burning any book objectionable and i think this particular action is very similar to burning the flag, and is counterproductive . so i can not support it.

In many european countries burning Quran, Bible, Tora and any other religious symbol or national flag is a crime.

You are stuck on a frozen barren island, help is 2 days away, all you have is a lighter and a huge crate of (insert yourfavorite religious book here). It's -20 and you'll freexe in an hour. Do you burn them now?

Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code, which says that “whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined not more than $100 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.” The law is enforced by the Secret Service.

Apparently, burning the Quran is perfectly legal(assuming it is yours) in the US. Burning our currency is not, even if you have the money to burn. Now that is just stupid.

You don't own the money (tangible currency) though, you only own it's value.

That is certainly the governments position. The same goes for real estate. It is still stupid.

    I agree.

    I have chosen:
    2. No, but I think it's a terrible thing to do.

My answer is valid for all books, not just the quran.

But I can't really explain why. I need to think more about it. I find it to be an interesting and complicated dilemma.

No there shouldn't be a punishment. If someone were to burn a Bible in the USA, would there be a punishment?

~ Obviously a statement about its authenticity and those who follow it as not to the individuals liking...analyzing what the conflict was about might determine its appropriateness.

There currently is no law prohibiting the ignition of a "quran" as long as it doesn't endangers another citizen in the US.

there are better things to do before burning it. for example, I've heard that in a New Zealand mountain cabin from time to time christians leave bibles, which come out very handy for climbers who lodge there and run out of toilet paper

No there shouldn't be a punishment for burning any book. I might not support it, but hey freedom of speech you can burn whatever you want as long as it's not in my backyard :p

Yeah stroh, other than the fire hazards involved in a book burning there are no real consequences for it.

Besides that it makes a great fuel for the fireplace, does it make a good toilet paper too? I'm wondering if that's marketable, I would think it would sell great at Costco. Each fly would have the words printed in different verses. As you sit on the toilet you'll have something to read. It is a two use in one.

Anyone develops this idea and gets rich, please don't forget about me, k?
