Yahoo, MSN and Google all follow the nofollow attribute.

I think you are confusing theming with contextual ;)

You get a load of theory. Where is a single fact in any of those "quotes"

NOFOLLOW or not, it won't solve the problem with COOP. It's broken by design.

    Dude, Its not just Coop...

my site running coop is totaly unaffected by any kind of penalty so far..
where my other site, not even in-directly related to any kind of link schemes is being panelised.
Matt quoted as saying that they are hitting sites which are indulge into "Un natural" link building as Reciprocal/paid links/link schemes, just to imporve PR/SERP.

I just want to ask, Dont we build links to manipulate PR/SERP??
If reciprocal links/link sales/Coop are 'Un natural' then I am pretty sure that Directory Submission and Forums sig links are un natural too. So what is left for link building??

glengara, I'm still here , good to see your bitch ass around a agian were have you been? Glengara has the dubious being able to not only get beat up ihelpyou but every forum on the interweb. But seriously its good to see you around.

If you guys arn't using the coop why do you care about it? I could have sworn I read that Big Dick doesn't even use the coop, I'm pretty sure when glengara ran his poll he wasn't in the coop either. What gives?

Why would anyone want to decrease the vaule of Ads, what type of retard would say "hey let me get a little less for my money"

Can I bring up another 2 points about nofollow

1.) Whenever I start using a blog, the first thing I do is disable the nofollow tags so that links are links. To me, having it goes against everything the web stands for (well for me anyway), that if I decide to link or allow a link to a site, it has some value to me and I'm not going to let Google decide it shouldn't.

2.) Lets take everything that Matt says as truth for a moment. He is basicaly proposing that nofollow is a labeling system. By adding nofollow to a link you are in turn saying it is either untrustworthy or spam. After all, isn't this the original purpose, to stop blogging comment spam.

So here the advertiser is suddenly with 1000's of nofollows pointing at their site. Is it that far fetched to say their is a MAJOR penalty lurking? Perhaps in their attempts to squash blog comment spam (And even this I find suspect as it is more to serve their own purposes and not webmasters) they crush those trying to get the word out about their own site.

The whole nofollow thing smells to me and always has. Blog comment spam has only gotten worse and to me Google has yet to show nofollow benefits the average webmaster just looking to provide a service/product. I will never agree to nofollows on my site, not because I am some type of blackhat manipulator (the only option on the poll) but because I think it is not only pointless but detrimental to the integrity of my sites.

Indeed. What is with all the angst Big Dick? You seem to be spending a great deal of time trying to discount the value of a FREE tool. If you don't wish to use it, fine. I think what you are missing is the "silent majority" who is using the Co-op very successfully and very happy with it. They have no reason to get invovled in the perceived problems with the Co-op - thus the skewed poll results.

However, it is fun reading all the arguments.

No angst at all, and I am not discounting it - just because I don't use something now doesn't mean I wouldn't if it changed. There are two sides to every argument and I am just highlighting the two sides of thought (which by the poll are pretty equal). There are sites I have had in the past that I would (and did) use COOP on - quick gain site which i don't care about if they get trashed, but there is no way I would touch it with my main banker sites as its far to risky - when you see your main competitor trashed because of the COOP you don't follow suite. Therefore, with regard to a throw away quick gain site then I am pro the "don't use nofollow camp", but for my banker sites I pro the "do use nofollow camp". Its pretty clear that the COOP in its current format can't suite both, and I am just highlighting that and provoking intelligent debate.

What is the point of having links with nofollow on them? If you are affraid of getting a penalty from using co-op then stop using it.

Why don't you read the posts - there are lot of reasons why people would want nofollow (or redirect links) - ie links that are less likely to cause a penality in the SE's - and it is also evident by 50% of the people voting wanting them.

"Buy saying what is the point of having links with nofollow" - you are expressing that you only want the links to help you in the SERPS - which will probably be the COOP demise as SE's crack down on it because of that very reason.

Why not start your own Co-op? According to you, there is plenty of demand for the type of service that you describe.

Then don't use the Co-op...use my banner exchange and i'll add 'nofollow' to every link that points at you. I hate people that whine over a FREE tool that they don't HAVE to use.
