Should site buttons be text or picture buttons?

Do the search engines have a harder time finding information on your site when your buttons are picutre buttons vs text buttons?
The reason I am asking this question is becasue google only has my main page in it's index and I have png (picture buttons) on my page.
Could it be that google is having a hard time finding the other pages?

yeah text buttons are better when we are talking about
search engine indexing so you may use ALT Tags with
picture buttons and images on your site then it would solve
the problem.

You can also use text buttons on the side menu, but also provide a short text navigation in footer.

Use text navigation in your site as well. It is the best way for the search engines to crawl your other pages. Use a site map page with text links to your pages. Make a google XML site map. Here is more information: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769
