Should people switch to scooters?

    Hi,

Scooters are becoming popular, a local garage sells Aprilia scooters, and they always complain they are out of stock, when i go and look at the latest models (because my scooter is in the verge of dieing i think, at 23k).

Here is some reasons to switch to scooters:

    1. Good for the environment (i can get 120mpg from mine, and it isnt even new)
    2. Fun to drive
    3. Easy to tune, good aftermarket to replace broken/damaged parts
    4. Cheaper to buy than a new car
    5. Cheaper on fuel

    Here is some downfalls:

    1. In the UK, you must wear a helmet (unlike in france and european countries)
    2. Cannot get up hills well (mine max's out at 25mph up hills at 40mpg..)
    3. Engines die after around 30k (due to cheapness)
    4. A Chinese import market which has a new make every week, no spares or aftermarket, and my mates died at 1,100km on the clock (after gradually losing power).
    5. Not always safe (eg: dangerous drivers trying to overtake illegally when on a bypass/dual carriageway)
    6. 50cc is exempt from Motorways

I personally recommend Aprilia, Piaggio or Peugot or Honda for scooters.

Who else here has a scooter?
Would you recommend scooters to others?
Do you fear the problems with 50cc scooters?

    Rob

I am addicted to my scooter.

I have spent a lot of money on it, and since my mates scooter died, i have been bragging about Aprilia's and how good they are.

This is the longest journey i have ever done: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=...068&sspn=31.509065,82.265625&ie=UTF8&z=9&om=1

It is my addiction, i have done 11,000 kilometres on it in 6 months, and i am still not bored with it. I go everywhere with it, it is just amazing and fun. I have never ever known anything like it.

It is like my personal Ferrari, that is how much i love it.

It sounds mint as well, the tuned exhaust, going at 40mph along the town roads, draws attention to the scooter. (People turn around and think to themselves "WTF IS THAT SOUND??!?!??!".)

I hate the things, all my mates who had one sounded like glorified lawnmowers.

Ye... you know modified boy racer cars? Mine sounds like that, it isn't a bad sound, it is a mint and lovely sound. The silencer isn't working very well either, which also helps to make it louder.

lots of people ride them where I live, they are ok but some are loud as hell, why? is that just so people will notice them and not hit them in cars?

seems like a good choice of transportation inside cities

Scooters + rain = head against the road. Front wheel just goes. Either switch to a proper bike or downgrade to a push bike to save the environment. I recommend cars however :p

Why you should not buy a scooter

    - These are the most nickable vehicles in UK. Do you want to lose it?
    - The danger factor
    - You can not take it on motorways
    - How many chicks can legally transport on one of them?
    - They annoy other around you. Usually due to the sound they make.
    - For the amount of money you can spend on a scooter you can get a decent used car.
    - They make you look like a pizza boy.
    - Why do you need it here, where it rains 99.9% of the time?
    - All 20 or so of my mates who got themselves scooters back in school as a toy crashed them and switched to cars.

Positive sides: You can cut through traffic... and get run over buy a bus or a taxi like my mate did.

To be heard also helps to be seen, mine is quiet compared to some of them, but it is loud enough for a 50cc. Mine is noticed just because of the unique sound.

If you are going to insult me, at least make a proper insult, i am not even a little bit offended at that.

What exactly do you mean? They don't cause environment problems, if they are driven well and not pushed. Are you talking about the 2stroke oil? Apparently, that is very polluting, and it gives off a smelly blue smoke, but my fumes are clean, and you don't see the smoke.

    Rob

Edit: new post, here is my replys

I chain my scooter to lamp posts or other unmovable objects.

That is impossible to avoid, but danger = fun.

The nearest motorway from me is 95miles away.

    Super-silencer: http://adrenalin-pedstop.com/p/TECNIGAS-REVOLVER-SPORTS-SILEN-13.aspx

I am 16, you must be 17 to drive a car in the UK.

    Good. I love pizzas.

I live in a village 3 miles away from the nearest town, Penzance, and the best and only way to get to town is via my scooter. I have full waterproofs, and you must drive around roundabouts at 15mph so you don't start sliding, but heh, it is fun.

    Rep added for good post

Get real dude (mightyB), Russia and Iran have been enemies of the USA for a generation now, it has nothing to do with you !!

What I said was that Cheney policy is a major blunder since it has bankrupted the United States while enriching our enemies.
