    Are parents to Blame ?

    Parents: The Agents of Change

Changing the trend in the rate of child obesity in America is not difficult as long as parents are willing to accept their responsibility for teaching their children healthy lifestyles. The parents of obese children must begin, within the family, to identify the problems and custom design a plan for change. Childhood eating habits must be changed, and teen diets adjusted to accommodate their specific nutritional needs.

In the USA, fast food has taken a toll on children's health. Because of eating more and more fast food, child obesity is growing rapidly. It is also one of the primary reasons for what causes teen obesity.

Parents must cook nutritionally balanced meals, virtually eliminate snacks high in fat and sugar, teach portion control, pack healthy lunches, avoid fast food and help their children increase levels of physical activity. Parents must teach by doing, which means parents must, themselves, also follow a nutritional and exercise plan that leads to a healthy weight.

In other words, parents must become experts at child and teen nutrition and set a good example. Identifying the problem and its causes is just the first step. Developing a plan for helping children become fit means creating a step-by-step program of good nutrition and exercise.

You must earn what you eat. The disconnect to Dollars is a failed society the parents themselves are a part of.

how can spanking a child be considered abuse but taking years off their life and creating unnecessary stress on their little body through obesity is not ? I think obesity is more of a "crime" against a child than a diciplining spanken.

Normal obesity i don't know since you can get a lot of abuses from that but morbid obesity should be a crime since it will cost us a lot of money in healthcare to take care of a anyone who's over 400 pounds .

I think fat people will say that it is not child abuse because they are "comfortable" being fat themselves and they have simply forgotten what life is like without a 60lb backpack of fat on your body....they have forgotten what normal life is like , or were born as fat asteroids and simply never knew anything else...

fat people will argue that they feel "comfortable" in their own skin and that they are no different from anybody else "on the inside"...fat women will argue that the fashion magazines are pushing this "anorexic" look and that the people creating these designs are gay butt pirate designers who have no appreciation for the female body anyway and want to make women look like young boys...this is how far fat asteroid peoples delusions go...

being a fat kid is about as healthy for the body and mind as heroin is...the kid is basically addicted to food and is basically a cripple...the fat kid is doomed to a less than mediocre life simply because his parents were lazy fucks who could not invest the time and energy to heal their child from this horrid deformity...

these fat people will breed new fat people in to the world and the irony of the whole situation is that fit and healthy people will be left to pick up their health care bills because fat walruses are not exactly the best of workers/earners/providers but they have "rights" LOL...talk about turning off natural selection...

parenting is not for everybody...there should be a parenting license just like there is a drivers license...hell some people are not even fit to have pets let alone children...there should be a pet license as well...

Totally agree atvking... and if you read any weight loss case study the person involved will say how they have so much more energy, can get so much more done, life is better and they'd never realised.

Having seen the effects of morbid obesity on family members (including a miserable death) I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

So parents that let their kids get that way - they're sick. Those kids will know no different and won't understand what they're missing out on. Atleast someone who is slim as a child and fat as an adult understands the difference.

Since you can't legally classify a person as fat the only way to improve the situation would be to have a law that convicts anyone that has a obese child . There are precise scientific rules to make the difference between fat and obese . Using those precise principles the law should punish parents just like those that have children that smoke or drink . It would be the beginning in tackling this problem .

Sounds like you're advocating for more laws, and kinda strange ones at that. If fat people are happy to be fat...wtf has that to do with you? If you work, how many of your workmates are fat? The reality I see is they live to work and die well before they cost you too much. Not many make it to retirement pension age.

You need to spend more time around the hospitals. The "disposable equipment" used in every dialysis session is outrageous and a morbidly obese person whose kidneys have finally packed up can be on dialysis 3x a week for years. Or maybe they get diabetes and that knocks out their eyesight. Or emphysema and they're on state benefits with additional nursing. And alot of these morbidly obese people have state funded caregivers who oversee showering etc because they are a fall risk.

But these are adults. What the thread is talking about is adults letting a child's health suffer through obesity (not chubbiness).

And yes, they would be strange laws, near impossible to enforce etc. But perhaps its a conversation people need to have and then maybe the solutions will show themselves without having to resort to "enforcement".

Bull , fat people deplete the world's food reserver at a much higher rate and cost 120 billions per year in the USA alone (1999 estimates) and that's just for children . Estimates how that at this rate by 2020 the cost will skyrocket to 3 TRILLIONS since 50% of the US population would require diabetes medication .

I'm very convinced they're happy since everyone mocks them and they can always get hot partners . Every girl wishes for a fat tub of sweaty lard over her and every guy dreams of a whale on top of him . After all a fractured sternum or asphyxiation ideals everyone strives for .

Yep they're happy and don't cost anything

The problem is, it would be almost impossible to regulate. It would mean the government would have to decide what healthy eating is... and they simply don't want to do that. They make a lot more money by keeping America fat. Heck, they recently passed a bill saying that MSG can be sprayed on crops!

And you need to do much more research before deciding that is fact. As a matter of fact my very-skinny ex partner did that 3 day a week thing for 7 years before getting a new kidney and is now quite a pud. During those long eight years I got to see a huge cross section of people and I can guarantee that 70% at least were as thin as my ex was before she got sick.

So, to say that's a fat people's disease and think you're right there...hmmm, you have no idea obviously.

If you ever had a nagging girlfriend. you would have turned gay as well..

OT: Obesity is not a crime, it's just a result of ignorance and McDs.
You don't need laws to handle it, but general awareness.. And you need to shutdown all those McDs

Well maybe in Oz there isn't enough bush tucker or something because over the ditch it would be well over 50% and you've seen the filters etc that they use. Mega bucks!

Obviously I've hit a nerve and you've concluded that I've said all dialysis patients are morbidly obese.
What I was describing was the expensive treatments that the morbidly obese do get - they don't just keel over and die quickly as you suggested. They do it slowly and its a vile process and it just so happens to be expensive too.

LoL, no nerve hit, just speaking from my personal experience on your exacting post, blaming kidney disease as a fat person's problem is plainly wrong.

The 'expense' you're talking about was created by greedy people, not by the obese so we can't blame the high cost of it on them can we? When you can charge $25 for a bottle of salt water (saline) you can only imagine the markup they have on the rest of their products. Is that our fault for paying it without complaint?

The biggest problem I have with this is the thought of having more stupid laws based on something non-factual. We have enough of them already and should be pulling down laws rather than making more.

It should be tackled by letting the people know how and why it's really caused but to actually make laws to counteract that would be silly imho.

lol, she nagged a little but no more than my bf does now. :)

As to why we split....well that's a longer story...and well off topic so I'll leave that one.

I agree with shutting down some maccas, just because it tastes horrible imho, but the fish n chip shops that replace them will probably be worse.

You quite obviously know what you're talking about here so I won't bring up the fact that the skinniest of people are usually the largest eaters (in the western world). Have you heard of m e t a b o l i s m and how people's m e t a b o l i s m affects peoples weight?

off topic: my last post says last edited by sarahk on my screen...and I didn't even edit it.
