I would get this staright quick it slowed me down.

This was a big eye opener for me. I built my links under both by mistake www. or just http://mysite(not real domain)

I would check my links under google webmaster and they would be very littlel. It seemed my page rnk was 0 some days and 1 others.
if I checked www.mysite.com it would be ranked and http://mysite.com no rank. ( inever knew the difference.
I found out that my site was www.mysite.com (not real domain) but I was building links under http://mysite.com also just because i didnt know.

I read in google webmaster to pick the way you want google to see your site and than stick with it. I made sure all links went to www.mysite.com and after some time I think about 40 days I jumped to pr 3 from pr 1.

As Richie said, choose and redirect the other to the one you are going with.

If your site is new, I'd probably take the www, but it is all up to you, in the end.

It doesn't matter which one you will choose - www ot non-www.
When you decide, redirect (with 301) the other to the one you chose

It is better if you use the url with www because search engine have great emphasis on inbound and outbound links. By not including the www in your url, you are splitting the links and thereby forcing the search engine to see those links as separate pages. This is where canonicalization helps

What about catagories? I mean if domain (root) is www.site.com but all subcatagories are http;//site.com/computer , http://site.com/cars etc etc. Would this be a problem?

I'm using oscommerce for a site and just noticed that all catagories are without www. Changing is easy but they are allready indexed without www, so if there is no problem i'll just leave it that way.

    http://www.example.com
    Code (markup):
Most people think every site starts with a "www" ;)

Google is smart enough to know www.domain.com and domain.com is the same.

I suggest to loging to google's webmaster tool – there is an ability to choose what you prefer with www or without.

Actually, they are considered two seperate URLs to Google. This is why we 301 redirect one to another, this is why Matt Cutts states to do this in his own blog not to mention 99.9% of all respectable SEO consultants and so called experts.

Once you specify your preference in GWT, it may take some time for changes to be reflected in Googles index. While Google doesn't guarantee that they'll show your URLs in the form that you prefer, they will use your choice as a suggestion to improve their indexing.
