I'm about to start a new forum. Should I use the new release candidate, or should i stick with the stable 3.5.4?

DP forums seems to be running just fine...

If you are just starting the forum you can use also the new, but if you estimate it would grow very fast, you should use the more stable version.

I would personally recomend to use 3.5.4 and update when the new stable 3.6 is released.

    RC2 should be pretty good.

These forums are using RC2 and I've not had any problems.

Do you need to use 3.6RC2 for any specific reason or do you just like to update? Forums like Sitepoint still use forum 3.0.3 because they have installed custom hacks (im assuming) and upgrading would break that functionality. Do you have any existing hacks that you have installed? If so, are they ported to 3.6 already?

I personally have 3.5.4 and see no reason to upgrade yet so I'll stick with my current version and working hacks.

I just like to update. Maybe even obsessively so!

It's a fresh forum, so there are no hacks that need to be preserved

Ok, in that case do you know of any hacks that you will need? Ones that havent been ported to 3.6 yet?

I would really like the hack that's used on this forum to detect what people are currently listening to, but I can't find it anywhere

if you've not got any special hacks, it's so easy to upgrade vbulletin... mostly click and wait... so i suggest going with 3.5.4 first and then upgrade to 3.6.0 rc2 when it's stable...
