I was reading some information (article here: http://www.mcanerin.com/EN/articles/301-redirect-add-domain.asp) on redirecting multiple domains to a main site. He says I should only use 301 on one of the domains and have the rest point to that secondary domain, but I'm not sure why. See this illustration: Say I have example.com/net/org/us/biz/info. I use a 301 redirect on example.net to redirect to example.com. Then I point all others to example.net. Is that preferable (SEO-wise) to using a 301 redirect to point to example.com on all of them. If so, what kind of redirect should I use on the domains pointing to example.net?
Using the information that I gleaned from this forum, I use the 301 method quite regularly for redirecting one website to another (the same website though), and from what I have been able to observe, I have not been penalized by google for this method. It has also been useful when changing domain names, to redirect the old name to the new one with a 301 redirect.
This thread was just brought to my attention via a GoogleAlert this morning - sorry for the lateness of the reply. To be more clear, you do a 301 on the entire account (not domain), then all the domains on the account will automatically be redirected to the target. I'll see if I can make that a little more clear in the article. Cheers, Ian
