Should I take the risk? Convert old site to Joomla.

    Hello,
I have a website that is pretty successfull in search engines, I get all my traffic from them.
I rank number one on many keywords for just that nisch, so when they are all added up i get quite a lot of traffic.

Lately I have been learning more and more about Joomla, and I want to build up my old site all from scratch using Joomla. The question is, is it worth it? Will I lose a lot of traffic since my new joomla site will have totally different structure.
If I create the website with Joomla from scratch, do you have any tips on how to create it in the smartest way in order to still get much traffic from the search engines?

Sorry my english isn't the best, but hopefully someone out there can give me some tips.

    Thanks

    Hi

No expert by all means but, if you take the content from your old site and place it on the new joomla site as is you should have no problem at all.

If you need help to do that PM me.

Hope that helps and hopefully some other DPer's will give more advice.

    Cap :)

I have a similar delimma. I have an old-school html website that is ranked very well but it's way to cumbersome for me to manage because it's not templated. Want to convert to a new CM engine, but the URL structures will change, along with the skeleton HTML source code.

Hey, You know what's funny. I was thinking about asking this same question the other day but didn't get around to it. I am a complete beginner when it comes to this stuff, I tried Joomla, ehh about 2-3 weeks ago. I started from not knowing how to even install Joomla on the server to making websites with ease.

Now my opinion is, if I were you...If you are getting a lot of traffic from search engines...DON'T make the switch. Someone else might say go ahead, but is it really worth the risk? I could see if you want to do it with very little search engine results you know...You could risk losing all that traffic and it could be weeks until you get back into the serps.

I use Joomla and I can tell you, you're gonna have to do alot of seo. Joomla straight out of the box isn't search engine friendly at all. You need to download some extras like sh404sef.

Redirect all your old URL's to your new ones so you don't lose your spots

I know this is kind of old but I have some experience with this because I recently converted ONLY THE HOMEPAGE of my site to Joomla. I did this because the rest of the pages do not change much but the homepage I have to update fairly often with news, etc.

My file structure did not change at all. The only problem I had is that I redid some links incorrectly so the links were broken for about two days before I noticed.

    THIS KILLED MY TRAFFIC

My site really wasn't getting a lot of traffic. But it did get about 5-10 hits a day. Which is enough for me to make some money. I am pretty upset because all I did was convert the main page to Joomla and everything else is EXACTLY the same... so it doesn't make sense to me. I haven't gotten a single visitor in the past 5 days. I am hoping the traffic will eventually come back.

The reason I am so upset is because the reason I converted the site was so that I could update it more often and quicker and BOOST my traffic. Not KILL me traffic. =/ Hopefully the traffic will come back soon....
