Should I start submitting to directories right from the beginning

I already know the following basic rules when submitting URLs to directories:
1 - The directory must be seo friendly
2 - The higher the directory pagerank the better
    3 - It musn't be a recyprocal link exchange
4 - The submission must be manual, so I can control where the site is going
Now there is something I'm very afraid of, that is, getting banned by google for either submitting the url to these kind of sites or getting too many backlinks in a short period of time.
I would like to know your experience with this method. How many are too many backlinks in a certain period of time?. Should I wait some time before I get into this?. Is it convenient to use different anchor texts to avoid getting penalized?.
Please, if there is any webmaster that has some serious experience on this I would appreciate it.

    Thanks!.

My advise is, submit maximum of 10 links/directories per day...

For SEO-friendly lists, see my sig.

Make sure site has some good content before add to directories. You wnat to to be ready if search engines spider it and directories look at it before adding site.

Do a few each day. Do not try to get hundreds in 2 days spread it out over a few weeks.

as long as you are consistant in link building, you are fine. keep up with the pace so that it looks organic. if you build 1,000 backlinks this month and 100 next month then something is wwrong. websites should grow over time. but it you build 1,000 link this month and 1200 next month and continue building at an increased rate, then it doesn;t matter how many backlinks you get in a month. its not the number of links, it is consistant link building which is key

In my opinion, The quality of directory is may come first rather than number of them. But should aware that link building takes time and also submit article should also be considered.

You can do more then ten submissions a day. Keep in mind just because you submit today, does not mean you will be included tomorrow. Some directories take weeks, even months before your site is listed with them. Then the spiders have to come through and hit that directory and find your link which could take longer before showing up as a backlink.

There is no harm in it. Continue submitting to directories cause all directories will not approve your listing at the same time.

Do slow submissions and there will be no harm. Also there is a time gap in making the submissions and having them approved so there is no problem.
