It's easy. Earnings will highly depend on your niche and traffic. Results can be from nothing to quite a living...and even more... From my experience it is a good addition to affiliate sales (again depending on your niche). Make sure to read the rules of the program...in details I mean! It is really easy and profitable if you have the right keywords and build a microniche website with targeted traffic.
Go to google adsense website and register for adsense account, put in your URL to submit to adsense. After reviewing by the adsense team, they will give you a reply whether your website is accepted into adsense program. If accepted then put adsense code in your website to show ads. Start with 336 x 280, this block of ads makes the most money.
The best placements are your adsense ads would usually be at the top (above the fold), in post ad (before your post content), and on the bottom of your post. For my niche sites, I use Text & image/rich media ads which converts better for me. Also, try using 300x250 ad blocks for your in post ad, this actually converts VERY well for me. My advice to you is try and experiment by split testing to achieve the best optimal reasons.

Yes you should go for it. Start with low competition keywords that are easy to rank, that will earn you about $0.50 - $1.00 a day from Adsense. Keep expanding and have many websites. If you earn $1 per day per site, with 50 sites, you will earn $50/day or $1500 / month!!
To earn big you have to have a huge amount of traffic. It's not easy but if you can get there then it's easy money.
