Should I Spend $1000 For A Domain With My Specific Niche Name?

My cousin who is interested in making a database of his rap collection purchased the url rapcollectors.com and was planning on putting his site there. Since his niche is dependent on traffic I mentioned that maybe a better domain name with a better keyword in there may work better for him in the long run. We came up with an alternate domain name raparchives.com We figured that archives is searched more often than collectors. Turns out the domain is already owned by someone, but they're willing to sell it for $1000. Would the investment benefit him at all or would it be a waste of money?

Depends on how big site he want to create, I won't ever buy a domain for that amount of money :p

It's a waste of money. I'm not sure how proven it is that keywords in the domain help dramatically. Help enough to to spend an extra $1000 that is.

Keywords in the domain help dramatically, no doubt about that.
But how many people search for "archives" anyway?

Thats very true! Its unfortunate that rapdatabase.com is already taken since that is exactly what its going to be. Should I mention to him that the domain he already purchased rapcollectors.com is sufficient?

Funny, rap-database.com is available and just as good with the delimiter in it, better hurry before some ass in DP registers it and trys to sell for $900 ;)

What is everyones feeling about using a delimiter in a url? Do you think people would get the two confused rap-database.com & rapdatabase.com
rapdatabase.com currently looks like crap and we wouldn't want to have anything to do with them!

No, when it comes to search results it won't matter. As for type-ins I doubt many people will remember it anyways, they'll probably come from bookmarks or inbound links beyond search listings. Your question was related to search engines and not branding.

I think its a waste of money, I mean a $1000 just for the domain. I think you can make a site be successful without the flashy domain name.

    Good luck :)

Keep your domain and use the $1000 for link building and you should get better results :)

Thanks guys for all your info! I'll have him stick with the domain he purchased and use that $1000 towards something that will actually pay off.

www.rapdb.com www.therapdb.com - There are probably thousands of domains available that are just as good. Save your money for advertising or something.

IF the domain name gives you 75$ daily, then buy it, otherwise, if it's just for "brand" and for a long term work, why dont you find another one? hhhmmm maybe raplock.com? or rapswitch.com? just some wider ideas...

I would try a domain name with both "rap" and "songs" in it. Forget paying a grand for that 1 that won't help you at all.
