should i settle for .net?

    Hi people,

I just wanted to know what people thought about .net domain names. I would like to start up a new website but its so difficult finding a good .com these days although you can sometimes find an okish .net free.

So would you settle for a .net domain or do you think I will be losing many visitors who type .com?

    Cheers

This is answered so many times. You should only think yourself, if the site is for not so expirience users then you would probobly lose some traffic.

I don't think you'll lose many visitors by having a .net domain if your site is known for it's .net'ness

    know what I'm saying?

.net is acceptabl as long as it's relevant. Just don't go for .info just because it's an "informational" site.

The .net is fine for a site. You will lose some typein traffic to the .com

You have to decide is it better to get a decent .net or keep trying to find an available .com which isn't as good because the good .com are taken

Check the .com version first to see if it has similar business type with you

Personally.. I would not use .net.. .com seems to be more brandable, especially if you want a serious site.

Unless yu are going for typein's with .com WHO CARES MAN. This is 2007 people are used to all sorts of .crap and most don't look even as it is found in a serah engine and people just read titles... A keyword .net is same as a keyword.com in fact a good keyword.net is better than lousy combo.com.

    Just do it ;)

If you are getting traffic from Search engines, .net is OK

.com is widely acceptable to be related to business. Unfortunately .net is not so :(

When the .com is not available, my next bet is .net because you can always work on a "network" concept around your original idea.

I'm a bit of a .com snob, and will always try to find an acceptable .com even if it means settling on a less than ideal domain name.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter of course, but I figure if I'm going to stick with a site for a number of years, I want to be happy with the domain name.

This is something that we rarely keep in mind, our domain is part of our online identity so the combo name/extension that make us happy is the right option :)

Makes no difference but typo errors may let you lose customers. People are so used to .com so if you have seonow.net be ready to find people typing seonow.com. It is highly recommended that you register a name with .com and annex the .info, .net .org extension like craigslist.com and craigslist.org.

And because of typos I don't know how people like to register them.

I just got dynadota to try that tendency, but I feel uncomfortable having a mispelled domain.

Yes, I know, typo domains are not being discussed here, but that's how I feel.

Because I will be creating a professional website that will have a lot of the visitors typing in the URL, I will try to find the .com although for future SE traffic websites I may consider the .net

Thanks for your replies, your opinions were much appreciated.

I have had okay success with the .net suffix. As long as you get a relevant name it should work out fine. But yes, .com is the way to go if possible. It's a tricky balancing act between finding a good name and good suffix.

Good name, good .xxx, good price. Pick two! :D

I really don't care what the extension is... I usually go for the .net after the .com then if thats taken too I will do XXX-XXX.com then if thats taken then I'll take the .org, etc...

I have a system I have memorized and it relatively works..

If it's a good .net domain then I would go for it, otherwise I would find a better .com. There are a lot of .com domains expiring every day so something you should be able to find.
