Should I Report this to Google?

    A couple of months ago I started seeing trackbacks in Wordpress as
    comments for sites that had my URL within the <head>URL HERE</head>
    area of their blog.

    It was listed with a nofollow tag on the link and a span surrounding
    it with style display:none. So it was not visibe when browsing the blog,
    only when viewing the source, but still my Wordpress reported it as a
    trackback url.

    Why would anyone do this? My link wasn't the only one in the header,
    there were 6-8 other links there as well to other blogs in the same niche
    as mine.

    This looks to me like someone is trying to "abuse" my blog and the quality
    of the links to it. Is this a known tactic to try and hurt someones ranking
    in the SERPS?

    I'm sure Google doesn't think well of links like that.

    Anyone have any info on this type of activity and should I report it?

    I've got to be honest i've never heard of this but i would report it if you feel it affects your site

    if you want, copy and paste the head code from the site / page and I'll check it out technically to see if it has any effect / does anything in any way shape or form.

    This one came in today. Just doesn't seem to stop. Check the <header> source on this page.

    Why and how this is being done is beyond me. Do you think it is harmful to my site?

    Not harmful, just somebody doesn't have a clue what they are doing / has their wordpress plugin set up wrong. Most likely somebody who's been paid to give backlinks on xx many sites.

    Well when I read your thread, I realized, that this is some kind of spamming activity by com-mentors. I have been receiving such type of wordpress comments for my blog since couple of weeks now, but I just ignored it and deleted them from my mail box. But I think now I should also report this matter to google. Thanks for the reminder ;)

    I don't know what Google can do about it, though this style of link building is really gaining popularity lately.

    i received it too.
    Probably they add it to head, and your blog will receive trackback.
    Then they may delete it ... and he got a backlink from u

    You mean it will count as a backlink even if it's deleted? I don't think so...
