if you own the forum why not? if its relative your the subject with your forum then its fine

but if your a forum poster i wouldnt recommend it as people consider it as spam some times.

As long as articles are relevant to your forums niche/subject you should post them.

Off Topic articles also can be posted but they suppose to be posted rarely as your board concentrates on other things.

The more articles are posted or even written by forum members the better.
This allow them to relate more to your board, be more loyal.

    You get:
    - valuable content
    - posts/comments to the articles
    - more active members
    - good rank in SERPs if you promote those articles on your website or other websites

Give something to be able to get something back.

I made a Contest on my board. Best MiniArticle* wins a prize.
If I went more advertising, it would make a lot better then it really did up till now. Thankfully there's still a chance to make it right.

    * I run hardware website, so there are hardware reviews, tests, tutorials, etc written by Stuff. MiniArticles are short (Well, I supposed them to be short and not really well written at the beginning but forum members suprised me. So proud of their job :)) reviews, tutorials made by forum members not by website Stuff.

Just to reinforce how important original content is: I wrote an article in my forum on Tuesday about a company (1 word name) and their current marketing campaign (2 words). The article was somewhat of an attack against them, pointing out certain hypocrysies and stuff... doesn't really matter. It was an original article.

Today, 36 hours later, that exact article in my forum is 5th entry down (out of 900,000 results!) when you do a search for those 3 words on google, and it's started bringing in a bit of traffic.
