Should I opt for private or public registration?

    Hi All,

Godaddy offers an option of public or private registration. benefits of private registration they say are

"Protect yourself from spam, fraud, stalkers and worse by keeping your name, address, email and phone number private."

I would like to know your opinion, which option should I choose. I read at some place that private registration means the domain is actually owned by GoDaddy.

Can this be an issue later on?

    it is totally wrong
the domain always owned by you

if you go for private registration in that case your personel info won't be displayed whenever anyone checks your whois data

I will recommend to go with private registration

and one more thing if you buy 5 or more domains you get private registration for free

    enjoy

The person listed in the WHOIS is the legal owner. GoDaddy becomes the legal owner but you have a side deal with them that you "really" own it. This was a problem when RegisterFly lost their ICANN accreditation. Many people lost their domains because they no longer had access to their accounts and couldn't prove ownership. Each registrar manages its own private registration service and database and it is outside of ICANN jurisdiction.

Private registration is good if you only have a home address you do not want on the Internet. Now if you have a business address you do not mind being online, then I recommend public registration.

As far as ownership goes, your are the owner of a privately registered domain. It does, however, become hard to prove "ownership" of a private domain if there is an issue.

Also, It is hard for someone looking to purchase that domain name from you to be able to contact you to make an offer.

You actually have to pay for private registration at Godaddy though. It's free at Namecheap.
