Should I join the Army?

    Simple question....?

I need discipline in my business and personal life and I dont know what else would be a good option.

I'm 19 and I enjoy running my own business, the lack of discipline is killing all of them and I think this is my only hope.

After careful analysis of my life, this is my flaw I found to be causing all the things I don't want in my life at the moment.

Live in Florida and recruiters are always trying to get me to enlist.

    What do you think?

    Thanks
    Dan

I think it's worth it. Make sure you take advantage of the GI Bill.

Have you thought of what you'd like to do in the Army? If possible, try to do something that will provide training, not just life skills, for when you get out.

If you haven't decided on a branch, make sure you look at the others before coming to a decision.

    :)

<edit> Oh, most importantly, don't believe everything the recruiters tell you. Talk to actual Vets before making a decision. Recruiters will only tell you what they think you'd like to hear.

On new years eve this guy i know arrived back from Iraq in a coffin. A close friend of mine was suppose to be on his place but he was "lucky". Some IED took half his face off in Afghanistan the other month so he could not go.

Just saying getting disciplined this way can be costly.

I wouldn't jump right in without sleeping on it for a while. You know how we all get a great idea in our head, jump on it and then regret it because we didn't think it through.

I think it would be a great experience and could only help you grow to be a better person. I know people that have gotten jobs just because they were in the army. Having that on your resume looks really good.

Some branches, like the Coast Guard, Navy or Air Force have a better chance of coming out of it alive.

The Army and Marines aren't the only options. Talk to people from all of them.

You may not see much of the world, but the Coast Guard could be a good route. Plus, if you're smart about it, you could get out with quite a bit of cash in hand, which will help you with your business ventures later.

Thanks, I really don't know. I mean it would be something that I would have to decide in the next couple of days and I know they have plenty of information all over the place. Thanks for the advise on the recruiters, they do talk alot of smack about how great everything is... lol

I understand, do you know of another source of great discipline that I can do without killing myself?

This is true, but I'm not really looking to add it on my resume. Especially if the only person that looks at my resume is me ;) But thanks

Agree, a fried went to the air force thinking he was going to stay here... nope, got shipped out within a month.

Do you know what the coast guard pays for singing up? I really didnt think of them as an option at all. Anyone have experience in the field?

Thanks Usa I really appreciate your input :) Rep+

unless you feel the desire to enlist, i wouldnt... because it's not exactly a small decision!

And I also wouldnt let people here decide for you :p I wouldnt let anyone determine your life... Nobody should dictate another person's life....

The problem is choice; and you must make your own choices...

If you do, i wish you the best of luck... If not, i wish you the best of luck in whatever you do choose to do.. :p

Thanks Chuckun, I realize it is not a small decision but I wanted to hear other people's opinion on the subject of discipline and how I could achieve it.

I am going make a choice, but it might be easier if I had another point of view or perspective in the subject.

You should join the Army for the purpose of defending your freedom. Military is not an organization to help you become disciplined.

I'm sure you can find other way to discipline yourself. I think joining the army is a waste of time unless you plan to make a career out of it

I was in the Navy during the first Gulf War. I would suggest trying to find Vets (maybe on veteran's forums or websites?) and get a feel for things. Take everything you hear with a grain of salt, especially recruiters and always from anyone that was kicked out.

My cousin moved up from enlisted to officer and will retire with a very nice pension after being in the Coast Guard for 20+ years. Most of his traveling was throughout the US and Japan. It depends upon what your specialty is and how you finagle the system, if you re-enlist.

If you sign up for the Army or Marines to become any kind of infantry or mechanized soldier, you will almost certainly end up in Iraq or Afghanistan.

However, if you sign up to work on a computer system or other support specialty, you may still end up overseas, but not likely fighting. Keep this in mind.

You are not in a rush. Take your time and don't let anyone pressure you. They talked me out of college to join straight out of highschool. I still got a degree, but after.

With the GI Bill and a lot of Raman noodles, I have no college debt.

Please lets not turn this discussion into a political battlefield.
    Thanks

That is what I am trying to find right now, but there is nothing that gives such value. Any suggestions?

I see that, and i hope it does help you :)

All I can say is that the Army has lots of glory, teamwork, and many rewarding things.... But it - like everything else - isnt 100% beneficial... There are the downsides... Death, struggle, mistakes, devastation, shame (in some cases depends what kinda people you're with i guess)...

With this, i can honestly say i have a large armount of respect for you whichever choice you take... Both options take courage..

    Good luck, friend..

Depends on the kind of discipline you would like to achieve. A friend of mine was going to go to China to live amongst the monks and study martial arts for a year. Wake up at 6 in the morning and go through vigorous training etc

Join a boxing club, find greater incentives to work etc

If you want discipline but dont want to die as a consequence of it then why dont you join the Police? Not as much discipline as the army, but more than you are getting at the moment!

Or start to play a sport! I play rugby, and if you aern't disciplined than you are going to pay for it with injuries!

My cousin just joined and he's in bootcamp right now. He was pumped to get in.

He's always been a 'kind of" scrawny guy and the type that's always gotten in fights his whole life and has also always been a smartass. But a funny and great dude.(irrelevant?)

Anyway, he's basically crying to come home.

I think you should join another branch(if you decide to join) such as the navy or air force. Dude why don't you learn to fly?! How awesome is that?

good luck with whatever road you take.
