I have a user that seems to eat up a massive amount of bandwidth--stealing my sites images, perhaps. He has downloaded 196mb worth of content and 5100 pages. In comparsion, the 2nd busiest IP is 96mb and the 3rd busiest is 38mb. Seems awful high...should I be watching these logs more? Should I IP ban him and maybe the 96MB guy too? The WHOIS says NTT America, so it's not a spider I don't think.
what specific functions does your site offer? Perhaps they were doing various things? In ana event, if he is flagged for downloading unathorized content, then i would ban his Ip..
I just peeked at your site. Those are some nice pictures. I can see how someone might return to look at some of them more than once. I suspect you are right about someone harvesting a few of them. If you are pushing your limits you might consider optimizing those images a little better. The minimum load was around 100 kb per page. One page was close to 300kb, one picture was 202kb. I only looked at the first 5-6 pages. edit: What I would do for sure is make sure that hot linking is turned off. Make sure someone is not using your image and your bandwidth on their site or home page. If you don't know what hotlinking is, just ask.
Thanks! Hot linking is enabled except for directly inputting the URL into the browser. Should I disable that too? I'm not pushing the limits--7GB of bandwidth this month, I have 20GB on my plan. I don't know how to do real optimization, as laughable as that is. I open them in MS Paint, and hit save, that usually trims them down to the 25-50kb range.
You might want to have a look at Web Graphics Optimizer (http://www.webopt.com/). I've been using this program for years. Very easy to use, and very efficient. PD: No, I am not an affiliate, just love it LOL
I just copied one of your image tags and then pasted it to the address bar. I loaded only the image with none of your page. I can create a page here on my local computer and load your image to the page. If I can do that I am fairly sure I can put your image on my site. Would you like me to test that and send you the link? I won't post it here. I will PM it to you. When you get your site set so that the image no longer loads on my site you will have solved the problem.
Humm, interesting. No, I believe you. I will disable hotlinking entirely right now. oh wow, hot linking is enabled??? I just checked it a couple weeks ago. I tried to disable it, and this happened: Apache detected an error in the Rewrite config. I really don't have a clue as to what those errors mean. I did notice that you have your images in a your main directory and not in an individual directory like images/filename. Maybe the main public directory can not be hotlink protected?????
awesome, i confirmed hotlinking is disabled. however, it still works by entering it directly into the browser URL bar i'll see how this IP is affected now
