Should I install Wordpress to root or subdirectory

    Hi all-

I've searched here and at WP and haven't found an answer. I'm installing WordPress -- should it go in the root directory or a subdirectory? I don't want my blog post URL's to all start with domainname.com/wordpress/. Will that happen if I install to a subdirectory?

Also, I am a complete noob at all this. My current blogs are on TypePad and Blogger. I don't even know what PHP looks like, so please, dumb down the answers for me. :D Thanks!

if you do a subdirectory yes all your urls will start with domainname.com/wordpress/ or what ever you put in the wordpress section :)

subdomains dont rank that well, but I have seen them used. I would use a subdirectory or a new domain name :)

You can install it in the root if that's the only thing you're planning on having on your website. For instance, if you want your blog to be at http://www.yoursite.com, then upload all of the files inside (meaning not the folder itself) the wordpress folder into your root directory.

Some people like to have a static homepage, or have their WP blog be a part of their site, so they would rename the folder that's called wordpress to something like blog, and then upload the blog folder, making their WP index page look like http://www.yoursite.com/blog

    Does this make sense?

Wow! Now that's a fast reply!

Okay, I understand - subdirectory install = bad.

This is where I got confused. Do you mean to say you would use a subDOMAIN? And if I use a new domain name, I would have WP installed on one domain, but my blog on another?

So, as long as all I want on mynewblog.com is my blog, it's okay to install WP to the root directory? I won't get mynewblog.com/wordpress/...?

I do understand to upload all the files and not the directory itself.

Yes, as long as you don't upload the folder, but everything in the folder to your root directory, then your blog will be mynewblog.com!

    Hi everybody (including sidebanders)-

Thanks for your help. Installation was a breeze. I was plowing through it, then discovered that BlueHost has a WP installer. It got real easy then!

I have my blog on a subdirectory (/blog/). If I were setting this up today, I would put it on a subdomain (blog.domain.com).
