Well the title pretty much says it, I have both domains for a product I am launching in late November registered and the owner of the standard .com is asking $800 for it (no backlinks, traffic, etc. not worth over $100). Should I go for "example-domain.com" or "exampledomain.net"? I have looked through the top 200 clickbank products and I found 8:1 that people use dashes instead of .net for CB launches, and as I said I will own both domains but I am wondering which to promote.
no dashes my friend promote the .net and redirect it to the .com i personally think the domain name without the dash "looks" better
why not get both Have one a redirect straight to your affiliate link, then your other for a landing page/blog and then link from your blog to the straight redirect If you can only go for one. Then, I would personally, go for .net easier to say word of mouth too.
Nothing wrong with the dash, and a better bet than th .net in my opinion - I say go with example-site.com!
Definitiely the dash .com, maybe you could get the strandard owner down on the price too?? $800 is a bit much I have a site with over 7000 backlinks, pr4 with decent traffic in a competitive niche & I probably wouldn't ask $800 for it..that's high.
Well his english is quite broken and he is positive that all his domains are worth at least $800 so frankly it is a lost cause. In reality I doubt I will lose any sales by not having a .com, my website will still top the SERPs and I will still have a bunch of affiliate links directing people in the right direction anyway. So far I am leaning towards what I have heard a couple people suggest which is that in the end I redirect everything to the .com, but use the .net to link to because the domain name is prettier.
That's a good idea. However, remember that most of the time if someone hears about the domain name SomethingXY.net on the radio or via word of mouth from a friend, they will first go to SomethingXY.com out of habit. Of course...people also usually forget to include hyphens... If you are serious about this website, tell the domain owner you have $300 (or whatever amount) in your Paypal account and you're willing to buy the domain from him today for that amount. My guess is that if he asks for $800 he will sell for 1/2 that much.
Maybe you should find another domain name in the first place. Or add something to it for example XXXNow.com or XXXToday.com. I'm sure that if you think harder you can get up with a good domain, even if its not exactly as you wanted - but still would be better than a .com or dashed version Rachel
2 of the biggest products on CB currently are both with dashed domains, in the end it won't make that big of an effect, I was just trying to decide which is more user friendly. I agree DLM, but less than 1% of people will get to my site by typing it in anyway, they will either search for the name in Google, look for reviews of it in Google, or they will be redirected to it by an affiliate link. This is why I asked in CB forum is because I am basically asking which the consumer will trust more considering that they won't be directly plugging in the domain name anyway. Great responses so far, this is something I have always noticed with CB products and I could never decide which was better (about 1/4 of the time products end up using dashed domains).
Thats right, at the end of the day it wownt make too much of a difference. Its just personal preference, some people like dashes and some just do not.
if its just one dash then def go the .com url's look rediculoous when they have way-too-many-dashes-in-them... also I read that Google LSI picks up the dashed urls easier for seo purposes.
I've done tons of research on this exact topic and have come to the conclusion that the .com ALWAYS wins out. Just do a search on Google for any top term and you'll see that 8 out of 10 will be .com and the other two will be either .org or .net. I have a .net in a very non-competitive market that I've spent thousands promoting over the last 3 years and I still don't rank in the Top 10 :-( Always go for the .com.
