Should I give a refund?

First off, I just want to say that I always give refunds if a client is sincerely displeased with my product. Luckily, I rarely have displeased clients, but I have given a couple of refunds. Typically because they think a script would do something it wasn't designed to do or something like that. But let me delve a little deeper into this story.

This guy purchased a script that I have legal resell rights to. He purchased it last month. He then contacts me just a couple of days later and says that he knows where he can download it for free and that I am running a scam because I am selling it.

I tell him that that would be incorrect because the original developer is selling the script and I have legal rights to resell it. According to the original web developer, no one is allowed to offer it for a free download. Perhaps there could be other sellers out there though. I told him that I would not offer a refund so that he could download it illegally elsewhere.

Today he contacts me back with a lot of baseless threats:

Granted, I'm not really worried because it would cost him much more to take me to court than his $24.00. Not only that, but I'm not doing anything illegally anyway. It would be almost laughable to see him complain that it is offered for purchase and he wants to download it for free.

Anyhow, I don't want to be doing anything shady here. Should I offer him the refund?

I'm almost certain that he won't take this to court. But I think it's best you give him the refund.. It's just IMHO. But wait, ask him for the link. It might be warez. In that case, sue him :D

No refund. He's not a cop, and no one's stupid enough to take you to court for $24.00.

No way. This guy is way unreasonable and is full of s*#%. "Police officer specialized in legal domain?" UHHHH, OK Jack Bauer. What is that all about? This wing nut is blowing smoke. Sometimes you just have to let people like that go. It is not like you want to retain him as a customer anyway. I have given undeserved refunds before but only to clients I wanted to keep. This guy can take a flying leap for all I care. IMHO :)

Yeah, the thinks he's all slick because he looked up my domain whois as if he looked me up in some top secret police database. :D

I don't really care too much about keeping him. I just wanted to know if others thought I was unfair. Looks like consensus so far shows that I am being pretty reasonable.

Does anyone know anything about edpudol.com? That seems to be where he says he can download it for free.

Actually, I'd tell you what I'd do... turn the cards on him.
As he's already paid you by PayPal you'll have his name and home address. I'd say to him: "You know it's against the law to impersonate a cop? I'm going to check out your authenticity with your local police." He sounds like a knobber so he might claim to be an undercover fed.

This is crap. Police Officers know darn well enough not to take someone to court over $24, plus I still think he is talking about warez regardless of what he says. You've done nothing wrong, and he doesn't deserve a refund for that.

As long as you are selling it with the license to do so, I would not refund him. It would be like buying software at Walmart and later going to a promotion at Kmart and getting one for free. It is his problem not yours.

Almost laughable that he claims to be a cop. Does he realize that local or even state police have no way to enforce anything unless you are in the same town or state. Is he calling his friends at the CIA to have you taken down? LOL

I had a funny refund request the other week this guy claimed he had accidently purchased a product that he never really intended to and could he have his money back.
