Should I feel guilty?

I wonder how the referral bonus weight works. For example, if I'm getting 500 points, does that mean someone out there used to ahve 5000 but now has only 4500?

Also, lets say that person creates new accounts and nids them to the master account. Now that master account has more weight. Do I get ten perecent of the combined weight or only the one website?

The network weight grows as more people join it. You don't "steal" any weight from anyone else. You basically add more weight to the network by adding more overall pages.

You only get weight on the sites you refer, not the entire account of one person.

But where does the weight come from if not from the person's site I referred?

I believe that you just get 10% of his weight added to your weight but it's not taken away from him. Just copied / additional total weight.

The weight is a number like 5,000. Technically you are stealing weight from someone but its everybody. If the entire system is 100,000 (a tiny number for this example), and you come on with 5,000 Technically you are stealing 5% from everybody.

That fact is made up by the fact that by adding your site and "stealing" a little weight, you are adding diversity which is just as important.

Hows that for an answer lol

bloody brilliant answer lol, now, if i'm right..... 10,000....

Joking, I think the point's clear, more pages in the network = more benefits for each member in the network.

Really? That sucks if that's true. Oh well, they'll still get massive benefits for nada zilch.. Just a bit less if they signed up through a referral.

That's what I was thinking. If whoever I referred realizes I'm stealing his/her weight, s/he would be smart to quit the coop and resign on his/her own wouldn't he?

I think the coop is setup where this could not happen. Most likely bound by domain name but only Shawn knows for sure.

Like yfs1 said, you're not really stealing their weight, you're leeching a little from everybody.

Let's say you refer someone and they add a weight of 20,000. You will get 2,000 additional weight. If the total weight of the network is 1 million, then you are stealing 0.2% from everybody. Of course the total network weight is much more than that and the new, referred user's weight is capped. So you are "stealing" a very neglible amount from everybody. To you it can be big, but to everyone else it is not noticeable.

So the person I referred with weight of 5000 now has 4998 (not 4,500). So all the weight from referrals is subtracted from the network before links are assigned?

It's not subtracted from anyone else, it's just that you have an increased portion of the total weight.

So if I were to refer my father, I'd be stealing a little weight from thousands of strangers, not a bunch of weight from dear old dad?

So Shawn says "It wouldn't serve much purpose because the weight is taken from the new account and given to the referrer. Since all the sites are your own, your total weight would still be the same."

I guess that settles it. I won't be asking dad to sign up under me. If I did I would feel guilty. I'd be stealing his weight.
