Should I eliminate LOW-CTR parts of my site?

    Hello All,

I have a site with two segments (English and Non-English).

The English part is doing much better and it’s generating ~8 times more money. Needles to say, the CTR on the non-English side is a fraction of percent. Yet, the non-English side is generating ~20 bucks a month so I am reluctant to pull a plug on it. I was wwandering someone can let me know are there any negative consequences this decision? And if I kill the non performing segment, what would be the positive impact?

    Best,

    V.

You might try running a test for awhile. It's possible your low CTR on your non-English pages is brining down your overall CTR and you are getting Smart Priced to a lower rate. Pull the AS from your non-English for a peiod of time (at least a week or two) and see if it makes a difference. Obviously if you need that $20 then disregard this post.

Well the question to be asking here is if pulling the ads from the non-english site will reduce smart pricing so that the english part makes more than $20 a month...

Smart pricing is tricky as you don't know if you are being smart priced or why...but does CTR affect smart pricing?

I don't think CTR affects smart pricing, your conversion rate does, but our stats don't tell us our conversion rates!

If you know that people visiting your non-english site are not converting, for example, if your ads are for american products that whatever country you are writing to wouldn't be interested in or can't obtain, then for sure, go ahead and pull the ads from it!

I have a question tho - are the ads that are being served on your non-english site displayed in the same language as the site? If not, I think that is a violation of adsense tos and you need to pull them anyway.

I would spit the languages into two different sites (different domains). Use 301 redirects so you don't loose your rankings.

Try running a test without the non-english portion for one week. If at the end of the week you find that you are noticing an increase than you might consider keeping the change. You might also consider giving your visitors an option of english and the other language which may help you even further as you will be catering to both your main groups and not alienating either.

It can take up to that length. If he can afford to go that long or longer it is best to do this. However, in one week you will be able to see if your CTR changes dramatically making it worth a full time switch.

I really remember reading that smart pricing was 'recalculated' each week. I thought it was in the truth about smart pricing thread but I couldn't find it. It was a google reply too.
