Many people say it doesn't do any good and that it can hurt, but I really think those people are just saying what other people say and don't test it themselves, as it still works for me.

Just do not believe anything that other people tell you, test it yourself and come to your own conclusion. There are sooooo many people who just believe anything they hear and they tell other people, who in turn do the same, while in reality it was never true to begin with.

So test for yourself and then you will KNOW the answer.

Oh, but i want to add that it is NEVER a smart move to ONLY depend on any one kind of linkbuilding. Meaning you should get links from other sources as well.

Mix it up and you will OK.

Link building through directories helps up to an extent but it is not the effective method get higher traffic and PR (unless its a quality directory). Submitting in all crap directories will diminish your page value...

Some good advice from tfba -
Don't believe everything you're told - test it yourself and
Don't rely on only one type of linkbuilding activity - use multiple techniques:
Directory submissions, link exchanges, forum posts, blogging, blogroll links, commenting in blogs, article submission, advertising etc.

I used directory submissions to tailor some of the keywords for my site. In addition, directory submissions are a good way to get long tail search engine traffic. I spend about 15 minutes a day submitting to free directories then use the rest of my link building time trying to get quality links from other webmasters. So far, it's worked for me.

What I do is use a page that shows me the top 50 directories by pagerank and submit to all of those when I start a website. That is all I do now as far as directories because they are doing little to nothing as far as pagerank. I have seen though with internet niches and general niches that the directories do help you rank higher but for music niche websites it doesn't do much of anything.

Dir. submissions are the most easiest and cheap way to get backlinks. However this is not the only thing, you should focus also on other strategies.

IF natural link building is the desired method of link acquisition, and I think it is then directory submissions would seem to be part of the mix. I stay far away from any method that promises to add 200, 400 or any number that feels unnatural and those numbers are "unnatural". I agree with all the other webmasters above who recommend gaining backlinks from as many sources as possible and not rely on any one method. I have done a great deal of directory submissions in the past but do them sparingly at this time but I will add directories that I think are worthy, particularly in related areas to my niche.

Yes, it's still good for link building. But I won't rely only on these links.
You should also do other things.

I think directory submission is not a good way for link building. Directory submission is good only for indexing your website keywords in Google.

You need directory submission services to get some backlinks. Though you wont get any traffic but still they are important as they can help in getting backlinks.
More over you also need to focus on other methods of link building like social bookmarking[ no follow though], link exchnage, commenting article submission etc

I want to say 3 things (easy to understand)
    1-Do manual directory submission.
    2-Do it slowly.
3-Over directory submission will hurt your ranking.

It doesnt hurt but if you use other methods they seem to be more beneficial to me like forum posting blogging. What you can do is just give some time daily to directory submission and do it manually and you will be good.
