Hi SEO gurus! I have a site, lets say its called 'lotsofwidgets.com' and it has a lot of widgets on it. I have just created a new widget, lets say a 'green widget'. Turns out that 'green widget' is a HIGH VOLUME keyword and the domain name is AVAILABLE So.. Should I just add it to my existing site 'lotsofwidgets.com', or register the keyword-rich 'greenwidget.com' and host it there ? Would doing that get me punished by google since the two sites are similar(ish) ? Thanks.
I would register the greenwidget.com site and build a site about only green widgets. I would also put a green widgets page on the other site. Then I'd probably link to greenwidgets.com from my oldwidgetssite.com/greenwidgets.html page... Not sure if I'd link from greenwidgets.com back to the oldwidgetssite.com/greenwidgets.html page though. It should be ok but might be pushing it. It's typically okay to interlink the sites IF they are about related topics, even if you own both without fear of penalty from Google... Where people sometimes get in trouble with Google is by interlinking unrelated sites that they own... There really would be no purpose in doing this except to boost your rankings... Interlinking unrelated sites does not benefit your sites' visitors. So Google (if you get reported and your site gets reviewed manually by a Googler) will sometimes see this as a feeble attempt to build a link farm which could result in a penalty.
Good advice. Even if you can get the high volume traffic with your blog posts chances are someone will eventually figure out the domain is available, buy it and become your competition. It all depends on your goals though. If you want to build a big network under one roof (domain) then creating subpages lotsofwidgets.com/greenwidgets is advised but in most circumstances if the traffic is there, it's easy to justify the advice above.
Thanks for the solid advice. I have registered the domain and will go for cultivating a site in a genre of its own.
I'd definitley get the greenwidgets site and that will really help your cause having the keyword in the url. The only negative is you have go and get links for it!
