Should I change my .html site to Joomla? Ranking Issues?

I have a website that I made over 5 years ago in html. I wanted to change it over to Joomla. The only problem I have is that I don’t want to lose my ranking in the search engines. Anyone have any idea on what I can do? Or should I start another website and leave the old one alone?
    Thank You

    I've found this:

however, if you keep the same content on each page, its a wise decition to move to joomla if you update your website frequently, it will save time and money and you can always use joomla extensions.

I changed a site from html, to joomla, to wordpress over the years. never dropped off the front page. So much of ranking is links in to your site, site age, etc.

Plan your move so your titles and content remain the same and use Friendly URL's. Move quickly on a weekend or whenever you speculate your will not be visited by the Google bot. Check your log files for an estimate.

If nothing ever changed we would still be riding horses and computers wouldn't exist.

If you have a legitimate reason for making the switch then plan and do it.

I really want to change my site to make it all automated but the only thing holding me back is the ranking issue. I once changed the design of another website that I had and I went from being #2 on the first page of google to #7 on the 4th page. It took about 4 month to get back to page 1 of google.

You can rebuild an html site in Joomla and use the sh404sef component to rename each page of content to match your existing site structure completely. It will take some time and care on your part but it will so be worth it in the long run.

While it is true you can use a plugin for SEO, Joomla comes with its own SEO friendly section.

The folks at Joomla tell us to exhaust the abilities of Joomla before seeking third-party plugins. I tend to agree with them, it is their product. :)

I get good results using the built-in SEO abilities in the global control panel.

If you know how to handle Joomla, the name of the old urls can be copied
exactly and the links are unchanged. In this case no redirects will ever be needed.

you can map your old links to the new content using for instance Artio's joomsef or similar - even simpler scripts that do only these kind of mapping
