Should i buy domain name with .net extension?

I want to buy a domain for my new website. The domain is available as .net (.com is already taken).

That domain with .com extension is registered in 2003 and is not popular. Even no alexa rank, not google search result, no google PR.

The name available as .net is good. So, should I go for .net or find something another?

Also please tell the drawbacks of .net over .com..

If you want to brand your website, you will need the .com.
If its just random words...go with the net if you can't buy the .com.If you say the .COM is not that popular it won't be hard for you to outrank it.

    .net is for networks
if you want .com then try to find another name or a better TLD suitable to your website content.

I would suggest you to find another one, because .com is by far the most popular one!
You can expect to lose some traffic (in case you buy .net)
in the future especially if you build a popular site
    after some time!

If you're thinking strategically then buy .com extension!

Go with an unique domain name on .com extension if you want a brand name...

As only .com extension is registered around 10 years before, and all he extensions are available it means the domain name doesn't have any value.

personally .net I find it more suitable for people who deal with networking solutions, internet stuff but for other biz , .net dont really fits.

which country you from? maybe you can try your country extension or anything such as .ASIA , .US , .Biz ?

If its keywords go with the .NET...don't listen to this guys "Oh .net its for networks...blabla" .It will rank like a .COM and you won't loose any traffic if its not short enough to be typed in like 1000 times per day.So yeah...go for it if thats what you need.Even if the other guy that owns the .COM thinks about developing it and become your competitor..don't worry about that.Do some good Seo, and some strong backlinking and by the time he decides to develop it, you will be too far ahead to be outranked.I don't know why ppl still think the .COM will rank better just like that outta thin air.You can outrank a .com with any other gTDL.Its all about content and backlinks. If you got this 2...don't worry abnout nothing.Cheers!

no offence, people just trying to share thinking and we could be all from different industries background and experience.

you point are valid in term of SEO point of view,
but when talking about customer impression, marketing point of view, why don't the world and every single person register .NET but rather than .com ? it is clearly .NET less popular for many reason as compare to .com .

    again , no offence. :)
