Should I buy a heavy traffic site to promote my own ebook?

    Hi all,

I am new to all of this but have been reading and studying hard. I have a great ebook idea and have started a pretty good draft of it. I have been studying IM for a while and think I can create some buzz around the ebook and think that there will be a strong chance of finding affiliates who cater to this niche group.

However, I have recently come across a website that gets almost 20k unique visitors a month and is not monetized at all. It's for sale and affordable and requires some simple maintenance. The site's visitors can be targeted for my ebook and I can advertise on the site, of course.

So my question, what would you do? - invest $1000 for a "shortcut" of sorts or keep your money and market the old fashioned way.

    Thanks for your input!!

I would not spend $1,000 buying that site because half of that traffic can dry up very fast.

In addition, only about 1%, if that many, may buy your book.

Think about taking that money and putting it towards advertising. ... The only sure way to make money.

No, I know it sounds nice to find a shortcut, but they wouldn't sell it if it was as nice as you say..

You said there is a strong chance of finding affiliates who cater to this niche group. If you mean that they will promote your book, then I would concentrate on setting up my own site targeting your keywords. You can either go the long one page sales letter route, or put up a 5 or 6 page mini site. Your affiliates will provide you with the backlinks by promoting your site from their own page.

    Good luck,
    Zeek

Thanks for the helpful feedback! I forgot to mention that it also earns about $100/month on adsense, i shouldn't have said not monetized at all. Hmmm, assuming traffic stays as it is (I know, big if) even 1% is 200 a month x $20 = 4 grand. .5% = 2 grand. Then couldn't I put that money back into advertising?

I like the idea of the 5 page mini site and will work on getting one done.

Yeah, but, remember, that traffic could dry up. And what are you going to have to do to bring in more traffic? Yup, spend money.

Another thing you can do is to put in cheap ads. This will tell you where you stand, without spending a lot of money.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

Example: Give him, say, $100 a month to put in a good size ad. Or two.

If you can't get any sales, or just a couple, there's your answer. Stop after a month.

Although he is making X amount of money from Adsense, it may not be permanent, due to part of the traffic that may leave.

It takes a lot to keep them coming back, so....

    I'm just saying.

But, on the other hand, if his site is better than yours, and you really don't want to build a better one, then maybe it would be worth it to you.
