I meant in terms of being spidered by a search engines. in under a couple weeks msn gave you enough credibility to index and rank your site. And for msn have your key terms in your url helps alot. In a few months you may able to pull that ranking higher on msn cant say anything bout google.

I've always wanted to say this: "if you build it, will they come?"

The short answer is no. You may still get visitors from search engines, but unless you are satisfied with 100 unique a day, any site will not take off without serious amount of marketing campaigns. You can mark my word.

Hmm, I seem to be a top 10 result when searching for 'guide to mp3 players' or 'mp3 players guide' in msn search. No incoming hits from msn though, so I guess it's no big deal.

In regards to marketing I think it depends. My sites niche is quite crowded, so a serious investment in both the site and marketing would be required to make a real success of it. I'm sure you could have a lot more success with a zero budget advertising campaign if you chose an obscure niche.

Having said that, I did try a directory submission service to see what affect a small investment would have. I'll keep you posted.

Well I've made the front page of google for one of my targeted phrases: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=guide+to+mp3+players&btnG=Search

It is a bit obscure, but I am seeing a few hits from search engines.

So far I'm in a couple of hundred directories, but that's about it in terms of advertising. Quite happy with the results so far, and if anyone has any other tips they would be very welcome.
