Should I blow literally all my money on vBulletin or stick with phpbb?

I agree with Nick, especially now with vB being under full a full blown FUBAR. vB 4 is bloated and broken at the moment with updates planned for every two weeks for a while. Go free till they can fix it...IF they can fix it.

And speaking of them being able to fix it... why is vB your only paid option you are looking into? At the moment, most are at least as good as vB4 (cept maybe vB 3.6 which is sadly better)

Stick with phpBB. vBulletin 4 is nothing near what the company says it is worth. Heck, I'm having a hard time selling off my vBulletin licenses that I don't need and don't want! Just shows you how quickly vB is falling off right now.

I would stick with phpbb if $ is an issue, then once the forum is making some money, go for vbulletin or ipb. (you can see my opinions on these 2 scripts on my blog)
I personally like phpbb over any other free script. eg smf, mybb or the dozens of other options.

Do remember that in less than 18 months, we'd be seeing vBulletin 5. I'd think about this properly, will my forum members, and myself greatly benefit from using vBulletin instead of phpBB?

vBulletin has changed, and I think these annoying stupid bugs are creeping me out. I've already converted a few forums to IPB.

    So, think through carefully!

History suggests that they'll hold another pre-sale which will extend... again and again.

Thats still a bit more then what "history" used to be... one large fee followed by renewal fees that were significantly less.

History also suggests that whatever they do, their motive is to make a huge profit, leaving customer pleasing as a last priority. Whatever they do, most people won't like it; they've made their impression, and it simply isn't a good one. Nobody seems to want to do business with them anymore, and I'm not surprised by that.

Go for MyBB - most if not all features of vBulletin, and a million times better and more professional than phpBB.

If you want to look very professional, I'd use either VB or IPB. (In other words, a paid script)
But if you want to look like other forums, and have not too much members at your forum, you could use phpbb.
Of course I'm not saying it's bad, but it shows that you've not spent any money on a forum.

If free, I'd go with MyBB as it looks very nice and easy.
    Your choice after all. ;)

That's like saying that if you want to look cool, then buy either Abercrombie or Hollister clothing (In other words, a name brand)

It doesn't someone professional to spend money on a forum software. I know plenty of unprofessional vB/IPB forums, and plenty of professional forums.
