I have a main site that is currently banned by Google (although I hope to have this fixed soon, but it might not be so "soon", if you know what I mean). Anyways, even though it's banned, I still get pretty good traffic for it (about 2,000 or so uniques/day) and I want to translate that to my new site, which HAS been accepted in and is showing in Google, but is still new, and so not a whole lot of traffic. (Just came online a week ago, in fact.) Question: Would linking from the banned site to drive traffic to the new site have a negative effect on my new site? I plan to put a link on every page (1000s), plus main page and elsewhere. How about vice versa? The two sites are not the same, but they are in the same field, so it makes sense to have links between them. I.e. It wouldn't be linking for linking's sake -- it actually makes sense to have links back and forth. But would having said links between them negatively affect either site? Thoughts?
From what I've read, linking to or from a banned site may affect your ranking if it's one of the few sites your are linking to and from. As long as the percentage of banned sites linking to and from you is low, your rank won't be affected much. So I'd say, only put the link in if you're trying to drive the traffic from one site to the other, not if you're trying to improve your link counts. The example I always think of is the big guys (microsoft, amazon), they have a ton of quality links, so if a few banned sites link to them, it won't affect their ranking. But then again, I'm fairly new at this, so I may be wrong.
Yeah, that's my own line of thinking. It's only ONE SITE. I'm getting links from other sites too. My thinking is that, no matter how many links I put in my main site (the banned site) it'll still only count as ONE LINK, right? So that wouldn't necessarily outweigh all my good links. Anyone else got any thoughts on this topic?
i would still link from it and not worry. the douplicate content filter wouldnt play into the links i do not believe...
I have had a couple (understatement) of sites get dropped from G and I keep the outgoing links on them and have the banned sites linked to each other. Those sites continue to do well in Y and MSN. I have no proof of it being detrimental, but once they are G banned I don't let other G sites link to them.
Can't pinpoint exactly. Some combination of the following for me (maybe): 1) There are some content sources we use (that we believe are legal but google seems touchy about). Sometimes sites based off this content get very quickly dumped by g. 2) Over-aggressive link building. Blah-blah to all the people that say you can't get banned by having too many inbound links. Make a new site, set it up so it can have 10k pages of content and then point 250k of network weight at it all at once .. very easy g ban. 3) Possibly too many sites on the same IP or too many new sites all launching from the same IP. 4) Possibly someone visiting our sites and not liking them and manually reporting to g. We're not in the black hat camp .. no hidden text, no pages of keyword jargon, etc. ... but we do like to integrate those adsense adds 5) Some other attribute of our sites that we're not smart enough to recognize as a tell, but the phD's at google are
Agreed. Keep on linking out of the banned site and keep getting new IBLs into the banned site from sources that haven't linked to you before.
