I think it's about time that Google increased their search page to display more than 10 search results per page. As a default I think it should be set to show 20 results. Then you can search 40 results with 2 clicks instead of the usual 4 (if you ever look that far!) I know you can perform an advanced search with up to 100 results per page, but that's not the point. If google were to change it, they would probably go to 5 results so they could fit more adds on the page.
I think it's fine, Google does a good job of sorting what is relevant and I rarely need to go off the first page. Ideally, I'd like 1 result please
10 is just the default. You can always change the number of results to be displayed in your Search preferences. Like here: http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en
Considering even spot 5 gets geometrically fewer impressions/clicks it would be a waste of computing power to force 20 results upon all users. Just imagine. Google gets 200 million queries a day. Let's say that takes half a million CPU hours to process. You are now suggetsing Google should double that just for your convenience. It would mean adding to their already big server farm, a massive addition to their carbon footprint by means of electrical wastage. Bad suggestion IMO, not thought through very well.
