Should Germany eternally feel guilt for Jews ?

"Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe" , Berlin

    • This has 2,700 concrete solid slabs.
    • It covers around 6 football fields.
    • “Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe” as it is now officially known – thereby excluding from remembrance of the other victims of the Holocaust: the gypsies, Slavic people, communists, lesbians, homosexuals, etc., etc.
    • it is located opposite a large, public park
    • It is situated on the most expensive real estate, the location its taken is worth $2.7 billion.
    • Every year there are reports of upto 100 children getting lost in there. and and annual of 200 reports on injuries there.
    • No one knows the carbon emmisions all of that concrete took.
Would you want anything like this cramping your capital cities $2.7 billion prime real estate, and cutting any potential for further economic income.
Which nation has had to feel to pay for its past as much as Germany.

Russia's Stalin killed 10 Million Christians, where are the memorials for them, and if such a memorial exists is it bigger than this one?

Those who had a hand in it were all dead by now, or nearly all. Should Germany as a whole feel eternally guilty? I dont think so, but they should never forgot the lessons from the holocaust.

What does this have to do with Jews you ask ... ok....

Firstly that is not a "national" monument, it has nothing to do with pride, Secondly how on earth do other Memorials look like this.

I think your just obviously jewish, no one else can provide such a clueless responce.

You think they should be eternally guilty ?

In 60 years time, do you think the Jews in Israel will do one about the Lebanese and the Palestinians they occupied and killed ?

Why dont you respond about the naming, they called the memorial "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe", so what about the Slavic, and the gypsies that died too?

It was built due to the genocide that took place. In memory of...A remembrance of the holocaust.

I think that monument should stay, it's big, it shows the scale of the destruction caused.

I think generations of Germans alive today should feel absolutely no guilt, they are just as guilty as you and me.

Furthermore, I would contest that it's taking up $2.7bn worth of space, as the picture quite clearly shows, you could probably squeeze a few large buildings in there, but $2.7bn worth? No way. I also can't think of a more offensive thing than to remove a remembrance monument - whether you think it's right or wrong, it's too late to remove it now without a huge international backlash.. and for the sake of what? Selling to land for profit?

    Your point?

So the German government has failed to make it a safer place?

Whats that got to do with anything? I'm sure that Germany's previous 19 nuclear power plants did more damage than 10 of these memorials could do.
Now that's cold. You cant put a price on remembering the dead.

I think it looks great, the cost is bound to be recovered because of tourism it creates.

I think it looks pretty good too. it's a large permanent reminder of what happened. Why would anyone, Especially someone who isn't obliged to contribute too or visit the monument, Object to it?

According to wikipedia in it's first year it attracted 10,000 visitors every day. There were also nearly half a million visitors to it's underground "place of information" and 40% of it's visitors were non-germans.

"It is estimated that approximately 3.5 million visitors entered the memorial in the first year it was open, i.e. about 10,000 every day. About 490,000 people also visited the underground "place of information", with about 40% of these being non-Germans. The foundation operating the memorial considered this a success; its head Uwe Neumärker even called the memorial a "tourist magnet". However, swastikas were drawn on the stelae on 5 different occasions in this first year."

So the cost of building it & the cost in land it has took, is small in comparison to what it has made & will continue to make for years to come.

I have my suspicions, I think if it was a mosque he wouldn’t mind the space it takes or the cost or even how it is only devoted to muslims though:rolleyes:

Exactly, we need to learn from history, the monument is a testimonial of what had happened and serves to remind us of the atrocities, not to make us feel guilty but to remind us that crazy things happened in history and we must not forget its lessons.
