Is it necessary for the domain name to include the keyword phrase? I have strong content site I'm building but would rather not include the keyword in the domain because it seems a little awkward. HOwever, the keyword is very well searched on Overture and will be used strongly in the content.

In this case I would say its neccessary .. if the keyword is popular .. then ranking high for it will be hard and you will need every possible advantage you can get.

keyword in domain is added advantage, it certainly helps in search engines in some way, incase if you are confident and sure abt the keyword go for it,
i cannot give you 100% opinion unless i know details of domain and keyword

I think you should definetly use keywords in your domain name. It helps a lot in search engine positioning.
