Because, that's what I want to know. Someone told me that only when you can't find anywhere else to get a backlink from, THEN you start getting backlinks from other places outside of your niche. And he says that you shouldn't even do that, only as a last possible way to earn backlinks. So, DP, is he right?
well its much preferred to have links from niche the same as yours...it weigh much for your site but then any links is counted...
Yes and No. If you do enough research you'll find that sometimes those guys at the top 3 of the page have 10-20 times lesser backlinks than the say 10th position. It's best to have links on relevant sites - good for SEO and higher CTR, but sometimes your niche is so narrow that you can hardly find any quality sites to post your links on. You check on your competitors and all of them have thousands of backlinks from pages which are irrelevant but have high PR. You can't fight them with the limited low quality relevant links you have, you need other links to boost your serps.
It is preferable if they are related to your niche but i do not think it is essential. There is nothing wrong with a few backlinks from unrelated sites imo.
I think it helps to get backlinks from sites in your niche, but then again this is very difficult. So, I always try to get links from any site but those with questionable content and community around it. As long as you can use your chosen keyword for the anchor text, I think it does not matter very much.
Though ideal, I feel like it's hard to only get links from niche places. Any suggestions on getting niche links?
I think having links in your own niche is high over hyped. I have done tons of research in my field and could point out lots of sites that rank very well for some high comp. terms and don't have any rel. links.
It is best to have back links from websites that has the same niche as you. Those links that are in the same niche as you are much more valueable than links that is not in your niche.
As far as I know this is doesn't count much, if at all. A lot more important than this is what anchor text you have for your links. Just try to use the keyword you are ranking for as anchor text and don't worry too much on relevancy.
if you're getting link from a general site, try to make sure that the site at least contains a CATEGORY in the subject your site is based on...even if the site doesnt totally relate to your niche. In other words, the "section" where your link is placed must have some content related to your site. I do not believe in 'link is a link' type dogmas...I care to make sure that the site where my link is found is well maintained...not just any site!
Looking at the examples of those major new websites, they have links from practically everywhere. So I think both quantity and quality counts.
In my experience I have found that a mixture of related authoritative links supplemented with general links works well.
I think its helps to get back links from sites, but its not easy. that's why i try to find and locate links from any site where most questions appear
Backlinks should be related as closely as possible to your niche. For example if you have a website about hunting, having backlinks from websites related to honeymoons and wedding may get you penalized by search engines and your rankings drop. Hope this helps =)
