I posted a thread a few weeks back about the amount of funding needed to fund a new venture. Well, me & my partner have come up with a great idea for a social network. We hit a snag when choosing a name. He's very attached to one in particular (won't disclose the actual name) & I think it's entirely too long (5 syllables), somewhat cheesy & won't brand as easily. I think a website name should be short, easy to remember, somewhat attached to what the actual product is & easily transferable to a verb. I cite Yahoo, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Zappos, Groupon, Paypal, Linkedin, eBay, uBid, Dell, Amazon & Youtube as examples. They all exemplify one of those features. My partner feels a long name won't matter as long as the product is good. He cites Wikipedia as an example. Opinions?
- The purpose of a domain name is to replace IP addresses. - IP addresses such as 1.160.10.240 is very hard for a humain being to remember. - Domain names such as fox.com is very easy to remember. - Domain names shouldn't be hard to remember. - Domain names are not phone numbers. - It is recommended that your domain name should be less then 6 characters long (including the extension). - Domain names such as uglyesturlofalltime.com is more harder to remember then 1.160.10.240 IP address. - It is not recommended to use dashes, words sticktogether and numbers such as 868034380276.com - The shorter the domain, the easy for us to remember and to avoid making typo mistakes. - For this reason LL LLL and LLLL are registered first when a new TLD is born. - LL LLL LLLL are worth gold. - Pronounceable CV VC CVC VCV CVCV VCVC VCCV CVVC are worth platinum. - Single word domain is a must. - Short domains are future proof for exemple: kiss.me is better then kissme.com kissme.net kissme.org ...ect - Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
website name, tag, keyword are the imortant factor for increasing the traffic of our website.so make most suitable name for your website.
Maalik, I am agree with you. I also prefer to short, sweet and easy to remember website name. However sometimes go for keywords in domain name.
i also think short names are good, it helps a site to become popular, long names look ugly and spammy
Sometime do think of domain name not only important for keyword in there, it also must easy to remember like brand name. domain name to show personalities and characteristic of the website as well. Short domain name do easy to remember and may have more easy to target keyword which is short.
If you DO want it to brand. You want a short, word, easy to remember, related to your product/service name. No symbols, hyphens, etc.
Shorter is better, but don't let it be a constraint. If you find a good marketable, brandable, memorable or keyword match domain name, go for it. And yes, quality of site is more important than the domain name.
That’s why eBay has been killing Amazon all these years, since it is 2 letters shorter . . . oh, wait.
the pronunciation and word meaning don't mean much when domain name gets less than or equal to 3 characters unless it's for branding an abbreviation of some sort
Yes i prefer short domain names, but short isnt best always, look lmgtfy.com , totally unmemorable domain...
If your looking for a nice easy to remember name you'll be very lucky if you can find one that's memorable and easy to remember. But for branding purposes if you can find a short easy to remember name then it's much better. Since you won't rely much all your energy ranking on search engine and all your visitor will directly go on your site without using the search engine since it's memorable and easy to remember makes sense
It needs a balance of being short and descriptive. Longer domains have an advantage of letting the user know more about the website from it's name.
