Do you think a government should be afraid of its people or should the people fear the government?

It should be the government by the people for the people but lately it has been the government by the as*holes for the as*holes. ;)

A revolution in classical sense is almost impossible since it is very difficult to find a common cause for all sections in modern society and in absence of any real power from people side and ever growing power at the government side, it is people who have to be afraid of the government.

Is this good? No but it is the reality.

I appreciate the middle path, but if you had to choose?

It depends on who "the people" are. If we keep on keeping quiet - no matter how much we object to what our governments are doing, then what's there for any government to be afraid of?

I would say none should fear the other , but the government should serve it's people , then the people will be serving the government back.
But in some conditions the folks doesn't do a long term thinking for the future , so at these conditions the people should trust their government decisions.

    Neither.
To much of either would be disaster.

The government should definitely be afraid of its people. If the government doesn't fear us, we're in big trouble.

Why would the government fear the people unless they are doing something wrong?

When the people are afraid of the government , thats like tyranny.

The government needs to constantly be aware that the people can and will over throw it. Otherwise, what reason do they have to not become sick with power and run the country in to the ground?

The government should fear the people, but when the government takes away the right to bear arms then there is nothing to fear.

If people don't fear the government, it would be chaos.
If the government doesn't fear the people, it would be an oppressive dictatorship.
    Where is the issue?

If the government is working for the people , why would anyone overthrow it?

What type of government are you supporting? Communism?

The only reason why people will overthrow the government is if they had enough with it and decide to stand up against something thats not fair.

Fear government. Mind blowing that there are people who feel that sort of thing is necessary for civil order. It's like there is no memory of what made America great and how this country fought and began it's era of independence.

There was a time when domestic government was empowering once freed from the yoke of foreign rule.

Government is meant to be the elected representatives of the people, to enforce the collective will of the citizenry as mandated by the constitution.

Unfortunately, despite the ideals and sound thinking of the founding fathers in the constitution, government has become oppressive, using law and taxation as means to restrict and constrain (specifically identified in the constitution as either illegal or undesirable).

Institutionalized bureaucratic government is no different than a dictatorship, it's just de-centralized and more palatable to the masses because the figurehead rotates on a 4 or 8 year schedule to give the impression of change.

We've got thousands of citizens outside our borders losing their lives enforcing the commercial and political agenda of those few who swore to uphold the constitutional obligations to protect life and liberty when they took office.

Wake up young man. Question your masters. Educate yourself.
