Can anyone point me to a good article or offer advise on things that are critical to preserve rankings and to avoid technical hiccups when changing domains for an already established site?

Thanks guys. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a premium name in my niche which I want to use for offline branding as it's much shorter. I'm thinking maybe it's not worth all the trouble and risk associated with changing domains and instead just redirecting the domain to my current website. Thoughts?

I believe you shouldn't change your domain name for some sole purpose, offline promotion isn't worth it as it may cause many SERP implications and would cause all your PR to possibly disappear.. Just my opinion..

I'm starting to think the same thing. Having a different URL solely for offline promotion should help in tracking my offline marketing efforts as well.

When you say premium domain, if it's more brandable and easier to remember then maybe worth taking the plunge even if you have a bit of a drop during changeover.
