Shortchanged on Google Backlinks?

Why do I always show WAY fewer backlinks when I search for link:-myurl- than show when I search for "-myurl-" on Google?

I've checked the results pages and they are proper links (i.e. no nofollows or javascripts), but they don't get credited as backlinks. I've also subscribed to google alerts on my sites and get lots of alerts for links added that are also not credited to my backlinks. Anyone have any idea what's up with that?

    Thanks!

They just don't show all backlinks. They recognize them though.

    Thanks!

Any idea why, though? And if one of the things you check to ascertain a site's rep is backlinks, then what is the point if so few of the backlinks are actually shown on google?

Also, if this is the case, can you recommend how I can check my progress in getting more backlinks if google won't show most of them? Should I just use the "myurl" search?

Oh, and can you tell I'm new to this? ;)

best way is to use Yahoo! site explorer to know better about your backlinks :)
Google sucks when it comes to backlinks matter.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not familiar with Yahoo site explorer. I just tried it and it shows the pages it has indexed on my site, but how do i get it to check backlinks?

duh. ok, thanks. Well, it says 472 backlinks, and when I scroll through the listing to the second page, the total goes up to 544 backlinks. And, then when I click on pages (which initially showed 40 and then went up to 164 when clicked) the number of inlinks went up to 593.

Can these search englines just not make up their minds, or what?!

Thanks for the tip on backlinkwatch. I'll try it. I like that it flags nofollows!

I have to agree -- even though the webmaster is not seeing their backlinks, they are still (according to their value) contributing to the destination site's overall link analysis and positioning.
