Short articles not related to site topic - does it help?

    One of my competitors publish a large number of short articles with content not related to main topic of site.
    Lets say I have cosmetic blog. He produce articles with title and one sentance.
    Example
    Title: what is distance between Los Ageles and New York?
    Content: distance between Los Ageles and New York is [some number]

    What this can help?
    Page rank?

    I cant find on net what is that called

    i think it helps on the amount of backlinks pointing on his/her site. and backlinks are really essential on SEO

    What are you asking about i am confuse. But article should be 500 hundreds word for article posting and can get back links from there that are most valuable and effective back links for site promotion.

    I know both things about bounce and minimum effective article lenght. That is the reason I am confused.
