Shop Network System

I have acquaintances that might be launching shops around Europe for a successful clothes and accessories brand. Firstly, one shop will be opened in a major European city, and then as time goes by more and more shops shall be opened.

For this to function correctly, a shop network would have to be in place, with a main database server (s) to manage inventories and the like. What other types of functions do shops need in your experience?

What is the best solution for this? As I have very little experience in the whole shop data system field I would like all help possible :)

As there will be more and more shops opening, this system will have to be a very stable solution, and have upgradeable solutions as the business expands.

I hope you can come up with some nice suggestions :)

Anyone who can contribute with some good information?

I have been looking at Microsoft Commerce Server 2007, would that be a good solution? I would just like to emphasize that to begin with, the most important goal is to have a working shop network with inventories, and not a website where people can buy online.

    Thankful for any help :)

Im by no means an expert in this however im sure you can get something custom built for less than $500, its basically a php/myysql script thats needed - i suppose the cost may go up if you need it to be encrypted and what not but so long as you had something such as usernames passwords and a front end system to add categories/items etc i wouldnt imagine it would be too hard for the right person.

Im sure some people will say thats obvious but for what it would cost and what microsoft commerce would cost i would image it would be worth spending the money on something custom made for your needs
