Rule #1 for list building on Twitter and Facebook - only invite people that are completely relevant to what you are trying to sell and/or accomplish! Although it's nice to be able to communicate with friends you haven't seen in 20 years, the chances are slim to none that they will ever buy anything from you. For example, I am the author of a personal development book, titled, Gratitude and Goals. So, when I'm list building on Facebook, the first thing I do is go to the groups, or other people's (people who are well known and respected in my niche) pages where I know other people who are interested in personal development will be. Then I invite the people who: a) have the most amount of mutual friends (a good indication of how interested they are in the subject matter) b) the people with the most amount of friends c) the people who make comments on the site, because those are the mavens (the ones who like to tell other people about your product if they like it). The same thing goes for Twitter. The first thing I do is go to profile of the well known people/profiles in my industry. For example, the DVD/book "The Secret" is very popular in my niche. So, what I do is go to The Secret's Twitter profile, check out it's "friends" and invite as many as i can in one sitting. At the present, I have almost 1300 Facebook friends, most of which are like-minded, and would not mind hearing from me. As well, I have over 1000 Twitter friends, who are about 50% like-minded (I joined a list building site, but I doubt those people will be interested). I hope this helps! I have not yet tapped into facebook, myspace, twitter, etc. I will try to do it soon to see some results!
I'm using Twitter for two clients - I'm doing what you are doing - "like minded" ppl. It should work.
