Shared Hosting IP Address

I have a question about shared hosting ip addresses. The ip address that im hosted is shared with about 100 to 1,000 others, I don't know the exact amount but does this effect traffic and is it important to get a dedicated ip address? My website is ranked 500,000 on alexa and not a page 1 rank. So if I get a dedicated one, will it effect my traffic both ways? I am hosted by HostGator so getting a dedicated ip address costs an extra $2/month, is switching to dedicated worth it?

At the moment does the shared ip address effecting my traffic?
Should I wait until my traffic rank is 100,000 and pagerank 1. Does it matter when I get one?

No. The only time it would come into play is if you were sending links back and forth between sites on the same Ip address.

There is no relation between website traffic and dedicated IP address. I would suggest to do the following in order to improve the traffic of your website:

    1. Directory submission.
    2. Relevant and Quality Linux exchange.
    3. Blog or Article writing.
    4. Choose proper Keywords.
    5. Regularly update the contents of your website.

    Thanks!

You'll need dedicated IP only if you run proxy. Else shared IP doesn't affect anything.

Another situation is when you need to use SSL, you must use a dedicated IP.

And even then, some hosts have shared SSL certs that may work with a shared IP address.

Another concern about IP addresses would be with emailing and spammers. Your email sending Ip address, which may be different than the IP address of your host depending on setup, may be blackballed by spammers also on your box if your host looks the other way.
