    Backlinks. That's the most important. High quality backlinks from other high PR sites.

    Frankly speaking, I wouldn't advise you to concentrate on increasing PR. If you would like to have good PR - it's easy. Get only 1 link on PR6 page (and don't have any other links) and you'll have PR4-5. But this way you won't gain anything in Google rankings.

    The real aim should be to increase ranking in search results. And PR will come by the way.

    Say you want to rank high for the term "digital point".

    To do this you should place that term in the <title> of the page.
    Make sure its in your content without looking stupid being there.
    You can also put it in your alt tags if its appropriate.
    Use anchor text within your site with just "digital point" pointing to the page.
    Get backlinks to your site with just "digital point" pointing to the page that has it in the title, alt tags, content, ect.

    nowadays it's really getting hard to get top search rankings :s
    I think the best way is as much quality backlinks as possible

    Why you are saying that?! I got a website with unrelated topic , but with 1600 backlinks (having a PR of 4) and one with 80 relatd back links having a PR0 ... and when I duplicated the content... guess what , the one with unrelated content came in front of the one with related content!!!!!

    then I changed the words, and only let in the title!!!
    search google for 'paid php scripts' and you will find redhits.com #80 , but softgroups.com nowhere! so , what's the deal?!
