    Hi

I want to tell you all what's just happened to me in the hopes others could add their own tales...

    I have a vanity domain 'myname.com' that I bought 5-6 years ago, I haven't used it - till a couple months ago.

I put up a single page - with about 12 words and a few images on it (the images are named 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc)

I setup an email forwarder and used that email to join 1 website.

There are no links to this website, nor can I see my email @myname.com in Google.

    --

I was looking at my server, and checked the stats to this website... and found it was getting google traffic for searches on 'my name' - so I checked.

A search for my first name space last name (no quotes) on google has over 3 million results, and my website ranks number 11.

The single page website is indexed in Google, Yahoo and MSN (also ranks top 3 in Y & MSN).

    --

So, how can a new site with no links and no content rank in Google?

    Hello,

You should wait for a few months, then signup for a google webmasters tools account and see if there's really no backlink pointed to your website.

If there is none and you want that your website not to be indexed you can use robots.txt file to block out search engines from reaching your website.

Google uses Magic. Also, there may no longer be a link to your page, but there must have been. Usually a link is created to your site automatically, when you register a domain on a huge list.

Your site might be on Google archive before and see new updates, age really matters. But this is a rare case...

It's in Google Cache with a Nov 1 date.

I checked back found I setup the hosting mid Jul, put the site up mid Sept.

Also - as I have no meta description, Google is showing every single word on the page as my description.

    my conclusions on your tale:
    1. age really matters;
    2. it must have been backlinked by some websites. say aboutus.org, or some domain trading forums.
    3. it's worth of some marketing job on this domain since google likes it.

    A little more info -

I was the first to own this name, I got a year free as part of some registras promo - I was a customer - and my own name was available, etc.

    I have never used it.

When I search my name in quotes there are a little over 5,000 results... no pop stars share my name.

I can understand the website getting indexed... I'm most surprised that a new site, with no link and no content ranks at all - regardless of how un-competitive the search phrase is.

As mentioned, Yahoo and MSN both rank it in the top 3... but I have often seen MSN rank keyphrase domains for no apparent reason.

But, I've never known Google to do it.
