Shall I Allow Comments On My Blog?

What do you guys think about allowing comments to be posted on your blogs? I basically use wordpress as a content management system, I don't ever refer to it as a blog as such, but I'm toying with the idea of allowing comments after each post.

    My worries are

    - spammers and negativity bringing down the articles quality
    - a lack of replies making the site seem inactive
    - and the worst one diluting my optimized posts. If people reply wont it take it off topic, mess up my adsense ads and make it all bad for seo?

I also worry that it may take emphasis away from my forum which is dead as it is.

1.) If spammers are a worry, set it so all comments must be moderated before they go live. Also activate a plugin like Akismet.

2.) Seeing as you don't allow comments now, the site must seem inactive. Allowing comments may change that.

3.) Generally most people reply on topic so it should increase visibility to the post. See #1 to ensure only the comments you want get posted; if they're off topic delete them.

I strongly recommend you add comments on your blog. I support what skaterkee said, your blog will look a lot more active with comments. On top of that, Google will like it because Google like fresh and updated content. Every time somebody comment on your blog, it is like an update for your blog. Google is more likely to give you a better ranking if you have an active website.

    Bottom line, enable comments! ;)

I think this is correct. By allowing comments you will create an open line of communication and this will increase your visitors which will increase your revenue.

Just because you allow comments doesn't mean you can't a "No-Follow" to the comments. This can help prevent the spammers.

the only solution for all of that is to enable comments moderation to filter all the comments on you blog.

Allowing comments for your blog posts will help you to make your blog more interactive. as suggest by all members you should moderate them before they get live. Indirectly your post will get more weightage and unique content thus will get index more quickly. :D

You will get more return visitors I believe if they can participate in discussions which your posts create. This is the way I believe this days, all sites need some community component to bring them back. Moderate your posts to avoid spam and decide whether you want to go nofollow or not.

I think allowing comments on your blog is very important for keeping readers interested. It allows interactivity amongst users and encourages discussion which should make your blog a more desirable place to visit. On my blog I moderate comments and use spam filters so all comments are always of a high quality.

Allowing comments can keep some of your frequent blog visitors to write something about your posts and contribute something if that's possible.. just moderate 'em to get rid of spammers

Do Follow is a great way to get more comments to your blog, if you're worried about spamming then try it for a few weeks and see how it goes.

    Wow comments it is lol
I'll set it up today. The site gets thousands of uniques a day so there should be plenty of comments but I feel it might take away from my forum. Who knows I'll give it ago.

Can I make it so comments are noindex ad well as no follow. I know what you mean about fresh unique content but I personally think it will just dilute the post.

i see no reason to block comments when we have Akismet.
And, the comments are also tagged with nofollow attribute.
