Just found an interesting article. The story of the domain sex.com http://www.dnjournal.com/cover/2006/march.htm I didn't realise at one time domain names were free!!!!
Interesting read, when i came to know about the existence on Internet (I think around 96 or 97) all the good names were taken, even if they were available i never thought of registering one, i was just a student at that time and did not have business mind active.
Even though people are reading that & think it's an great story most people will hear plenty of good solid investment ideas & never take action. I'm sure when he told people that he was going to register internet domain names people had doubts, excuses why it would never work or sell, & look at him now. I've told people that the IDN Domain market is the second coming & every single major internet technology holder is gearing up for it. Most have already adapted for it. But... most people will say.. oh it will never work....
there was a program on him and sex.com on channel 5(UK) ages ago. That guy who stole the domain was a snake.
the "pirate" who stole it forged ownership transfer documents. he made a killing off of it by placing Ads on it, unbeknowgnst to the real owner, which of course made the owner sue him after he found out. the owner won $56 million in the lawsuit, and the pirate has been on the run since...although I remember reading that he had been caught in Mexico. Sounds almost like a movie script! cb
Nah. I sat one day in 1998 and registered 40 names that are easily worth $1.5mm today. As recently as late 99 early 2000 I registered names like webblog.com, freeblogs.com, weblogs.com and a bunch of others. The net is always evolving and there are always good names out there... Back on topic, I've been friendly with the gentleman who originally registered sex.com. He also developed Match.com... He's a hell of a nice guy and very, very bright.
