For a perminate link a one time fee is very ressonable price. I have submitted to the directory and I have recieved refers from my submission. IMO in the long run well worth while one time investment.

IMO there is no guarantee for higher rankings but would help put you one step closer to a good ranking. (you can't get ranked by doing nothing... this is just one way)

I would also like to throw my directory in the hat AroundTheWEb.com only $15 for a life time listing.

My 2p's worth (I'm English), is that alot of the paid directories which have little/no PR - some which have been mentioned above...should be free to start off with. Many of these sites make money from advertisers anyway.

As for ranking on Google, I'm wondering why this is so important since if you are creating your own search site - surely Google is a competitor?

    I don`t think so.
Starting a directory by getting your hosting bills from pasting affliate sites links all your website is not a wise decision.

I don`t think misohoni, you understand a good directory purpose...
If you are ranking for a good term in google, or other SE you are getting quality traffic to your directory which is being distributed among the sites listed in your directory.

Its true these days new directories are mushrooming the net, but in short time you will find only a few good directories will stand to contribute anything useful to webmasters or general surfers.

A directory should appear like a directory and the best example is Dmoz.com no affliate links in the footer, no micro buttons but clean crisp and clean. All links given equal weightage, with an exception of a star from editors on a few sites.

And Google is a Search engine not a directory, so there is no logic in comparing it with a directory.

    -- Just my opinion --

I think I understand the concept of a good directory and the examples you gave were all free submit sites, so makes me wonder why we are now heading in the direction of Paid inclusion for directories which aren't even ranked in the same terms as Dmoz, Yahoo etc.,

A good directory should promote the sites it contains, be clean, easy to navigate, contain little no advertising, no pop ups etc., - but should mainly be focused upon the content.

People use Search Directories to find information, people who can use a directory and find relevant info will go back to it time and time again.

What puzzles me about Paid-for directories like yours is that it doesn't represent what's available on the www, but only representing companies/individuals who can afford to pay the fee to place their listing on your site...it doesn't make sense.

Is your site meant to be used in conjunction with Google?

Thanks for bringing this point out
http://www.webatlas.org represents human edited good content websites found all over the net. I am paying my editors to find quality sites and add them to the directory so that if you are in search for some good results or sites and are tierd of getting spam results, you can easily find the sites you want.

Of total sites listed only x% are paid submissions and all other are gathered by editors.

I have told you http://www.webatlas.org do accept free submisisons but for non commercial content rich sites.
    Details are at - http://www.seozip.com/forums/webatlas.org-directory.html

For us our target audience is not webmasters or advertisers. You won`t find footer links, banners ads, or sponsored ads anywhere in the directory. I know it will take time but we are continuously adding quality content sites and growing fast. Money earned from paid submissions are helping us in the same regard.

Again as I told you there is nothing to be similar between a directory and a search engine. WebAtlas.org is a directory, and will try its best to be a resource for finding quality, spam free sites under one roof.

Its an ambitious project, but I am working hard with it.
