Setting up FFMPEG on Server?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by Ascendancy, Nov 28, 2009.

Does anybody have any experience with this and could like to a how-to guide or give advice about how to set up FFMPEG on a server? I currently have hosting with HostGator and I am running a site on SocialEngine, and I want to install the video plugin.

All of my server and PHP requirements are great, the only issue is that I have never set up FFMPEG before and don't really know how to work with flash video conversion and resizing, stuff like that, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're on shared, good luck, because it's up to the hosting company to install it, and I doubt they would due to the resource usages and bandwidth.

If you're on a VPS, you'll need a sturdy one, as streaming all that video will be costly if you have a lot of users.

This one will explain how to install ffmpeg, ffmpeg-PHP, Mplayer, Mencoder, flv2tool, LAME MP3 Encoder, and Libog.

Of course, if you dont have root shell access, you cant install it. In other words, if you are on shared hosting, ask your hosting provider to install it to their servers and if the answer is "no", then its time to look for a new host.

I do have a shared hosting account, so I'll just have to wait until the site grows big enough where we can afford to upgrade to a VPS or entire server hosting... Thanks for the links though, I'll check em out and bookmark them for when I do need to install this!

I had to setup my FFMPG on a dedicated server. Shared hosting will not allow it.... Get ready to pay $150/month for hosting.

You could try to use a Wordpress Video theme.. ( I have on if you need it )
