Setting Up A Wordpress Blog

Discussion in 'WordPress' started by Jake Howard, Feb 12, 2011.

I have just purchased a domain name and I am looking to use it to set up my first wordpress blog, and I just had a couple of questions in regards to setting it up.

    1. Apart from just purchasing my domain name, do I also need to arrange hosting?

    2. How do I set up my blog so that my domain is the one I purchased, and not my username.wordpress

    Cheers

    Jake

You need to purchase hosting for that as well. After that you can install WP script on that which is available at wordpress.org/download/ (You can find details of installation in readme file which comes alongwith zip file).

    Regards.

There are two different types of WordPress blog, the ones with an address like thingy.wordpress.com are actually hosted by WordPress. You can use your own domain with those but you do need to pay for the privilege.

Alternatively get your own hosting, and either install the WP script yourself as deluxdon suggests or, depending on your host, they may offer an automatic install of popular scripts so you don't need to faff about uploading things yourself.

The difference is with wp-hosted, there's a limit to what you can do with the blog, which themes you can use etc. With self-hosted everything is yours, you can do whatever you like.

Thanks for the responses, particularly Kiramanic. I was a bit confused about Wordpress when posting, but explaining the difference between Wordpress.org and Wordpress.com has cleared it up a bit for me.

I might look at setting it up myself through Wordpress.org

No worries at all. Self-hosted is definitely the way to go in terms of monetization or a business blog, though since you'd need hosting it's best to be sure you can actually blog regularly enough to make it worthwhile :)
